PHPBB (makers of forum-software) under attack, same here???

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Sun Dec 21, 2014 12:22 pm

PHPBB, the people who make the forum-software, has been under a severe attack.
It is possible that the same attackers are now trying the same on our (and other people's) PHPBB forum!
For more info, check this out: https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2185747

I don't want to create antagonism or a panic, but the way our forum "un-behaves" lately is a royal PITA.
Error messages with: "User xxx already has more than 'max_user_connections' active connections [1203]"
are unfortunately happening all too often for everybody's liking.

I informed Bill of the phpBB.com attack on the 15th. I've been getting more of the "General Error" SQL messages popping up at random times since early December and I think that it's because of the large uptick in Guest accesses of the forum. Normally, the background noise is around 50 guests but I've seen upwards of 350+. It stays there for several minutes and then goes back down. For example, in the time it's taken me to reply to your post and now (about 6 minutes), there were initially 233 guests and now it's at 77. We've taken some steps to try to minimize the SQL errors but it's like playing Whack-a-Mole.

For now, members may notice an additional CAPTCHA challenge when logging in. The usual advice concerning login credentials applies: don't re-use your passwords across multiple sites, use a fairly complex password, don't use a dictionary word. I've not seen any evidence yet that a member's account has been taken over but we are monitoring the situation.

NOTE: All links to PC-Doctor software hosted by me are dead. Files removed 8/28/12 by manufacturer's demand.

Hate these attacks, people need to get some respect for other people's stuff - also digitally!

I agree. I wonder just who these [insert noun] are? I often see the results of their work and even if I watched American football (their links sometimes indicate televised games to watch) I would not click on their links. Even if I needed new kitchen tiles I would rather locate my own source for tiles. Utterly ridiculous. :x
