This thread was split off from this post in: How is the W500 quality

Please read the Forum Rules, Section 5!
This Section 5. about pictures was last modified on 07/31/2014.
5. IF needed, you may add one or more photographs to your post. In that case you must also place a warning in the Subject: line!
PLEASE note that you may have multiple thumbnails (ideally linking to full-sized images) as long as their sum does NOT exceed the 50KB limit.
It would also be greatly appreciated if you can keep the pixel dimensions to something around 800x600.
Any picture(s) exceeding this 50KB limit may be changed to link(s) by an Administrator/Moderator (without warning).
Reason: many people look at the forum using cellphones, which may have Download Restrictions.
Important: ONLY in this: Pictures of your ThinkPad & desk setup Forum are you allowed to use more, and larger, pictures.

I know the rules. My pictures were all 800x600 dimensions (don't know the file size) directly linked from imageshack
and it was showing my Thinkpad set ups.

Also the whole 'viewing the forums on the cellphone' phrase should really be updated.

When the original rules were written most people had cellphones that looked like this:

Image

or at best some of us had this in our pockets:

Image

Now everyone has 4G LTE Androids, Tablets, iPads and iPhones that are way more powerful than the Thinkpad I am typing on right now.
So viewing images larger than 50k on a smart phone or tablet should not be causing anyone drama in the year 2014.

Then again i'm not sure of the limitation of this website's design when it comes to holding onto pictures in various threads
but the rules should be updated to cater to the tremendous changes in mobile smartphone technology and 4G LTE wireless technology since 2004.

I didn't mean to cause any harm or exhibit disregard for the rules so please forgive me.
Thanks.

your 1st picture was 97.27 KB
your 2nd picture was 127.63 KB
your 3rd picture was 86.95 KB
your 4th picture was 130.33 KB
your 5th picture was 119.75 KB
Total: 561.93 KB
That is more than 11 (eleven) times the allowed limit of 50KB!

Also, you can have 800x600 pictures that are less than 10 KB!

Whether people have an ancient Nokia, or the latest iPhone or Android, makes no difference to the Forum.
The Forum just would like to accommodate EVERYbody.

So please post just links in future, thank you.

Believe me, if I could view this forum on a Nokia 8310, I so totally would. That phone was awesome.

I'll state that to this day Nokia 3589 is by far the best cell phone that I've ever owned.

Extraordinary battery life - especially for a CDMA unit - and reception in the most unbelievable spots...

Since this thread has already gone off-topic,

I'm just gonna make it more off-topic

Just wondering, is there any sony ericsson fans here? XD

My first phone was Nokia 3210, then I go all the way sony ericsson K608i, K800i, K810i, W850i, W995 & C905, (wanted a N93i inbetween) and one year ago I got this phone camera, Nokia Lumia 1020.

Personally, I think sony ericsson were better than Nokia after the K700i, especially after K800i. TBH I never understood people's obsession with Symbian S60. On a SE phone you can flash the camera driver, acoustic driver, fancy patches etc.etc. Sadly they are all gone, as well as our beloved classical thinkpads.

P.S. no disregard for forum rules, but even my Sony Ericsson K608i back in 2005 was enough to handle pictures of over 50KB :/ (And that's one of the main reason why I liked Sony Ericsson)

Well since you asked.

I quite liked Sony Ericssons. My first and one of my favourites was the T610. It had a good feature set for the time period, I always had good experiences with it as a phone, plus it just looked cool.

I also had a T630, which was much the same thing, except part of the case was plastic instead of aluminum. I think there were some differences in the firmware also.

I also had a K700i. That was an excellent phone. I kinda wish I still had one of those actually...

I also had a W800i and W810i. Both nice phones. I was slightly underwhelmed by the W810i. For something branded as a Walkman, you'd think it'd have enough power to play 320Kbps MP3 files. Actually the whole phone is quite sluggish and slow. I still use my W810i as an LED flashlight. I actually have the white version.

As far as Nokias go, I did have a 3210. I really like the 3210. I mentioned above that I think the 3310 gets enough love already. It's probably the first phone that people think of whenever the subject of old Nokia bricks comes up. I thought the 3210 looked more sleek, and I wasn't too excited about the features that the 3310 added.

The 8310 though, oh man. That phone was a game changer. It was tiny, like really small, which meant everything back in 2002 or so. Plus it looked amazing, and it had FM radio. I was sold on that alone. I used mine as my main phone until 2006.

I had an N70 before and I couldn't get used to the newer version of Symbian, with the different key layout. I actually traded my W800i for it, and quickly traded back.

The Nokia 6300 was a nice phone, quite durable too.

But the one that beats them all, the Nokia 6230. In my opinion, the best cell phone ever made. For a 2004 phone, it had a great feature set. Bluetooth, MMC support and MP3 playback being the most notable. It had an OK screen, but dare I say that wasn't important. I always got great battery life out of all of the units I had/have, and great reception too. The xPress-on covers were great. Not to mention that the phone was incredibly easy to completely disassemble, and parts were cheap.

Plus there was a successor: the 6230i. That added a lot, but didn't change the fundamental design. Better screen, more supported video and audio formats, etc. Excellent phone.

________________

I'm not sure what the deal with the 50KB image rule is. My guess is that the rule is still in place because it has been that way for so long. Plus a lot of people on various forums have a habit of posting gigantic images which take a while to load and give the page a horizontal scroll bar. Those threads can be annoying to navigate. Especially if you're looking to navigate them quickly.

Another phpBB forum of which I'm a member has a resolution limit on images over 1024x768, but no size limit, that seems more sensible in this day and age to me.

W810i is exactly the same as W800i, infact you can flash the W800i with W810i firmware and vice versa. Problem is that, the hardware of W810i was just the level of K700i/K600i and wasn't supposed to handle multiple java applications running together. And I reckon that's why w810i couldn't handle 320kbps mp3 (P.S. my W995 can handle WAV @1300+kbps  )

Also T610 was a really slow phone.... It takes awful long to start up and back then I prefer Nokia 3210 much more than T610...

Still, my favourite phone is SE K800i/K810i

P.S. I'm not sure if the forum rule is designed for old laptops such as 701c, but what if the server hosting the forum is not even as powerful as my W701...... >_<

I still have this W810i. I've mentioned it from time-to-time over the last 8 years. In fact, I'm listening to the FM radio as I type. The original one was replaced after a couple of years when it refused to turn on. The only other problem I've had with it happened just yesterday. It locked up trying to make a phone call. I was repeatedly redialing while the FM radio was active; something I do quite a lot. It refused to respond to any keys, even the power button, all the while playing the FM radio and the screen indicating it was dialing out. I had to remove the battery. I like this phone so much that I bought a used one off eBay about 18 months ago as a backup.

I've refused to buy into the "smartphone" ecosystem for my personal phone. I'm already paying for my family's iPhones and Androids data plans. That's not to say I don't use 3G/4G technology - I do. I use a T-Mobile hotspot that my iPod and personal laptops here at work tap into to. Which gets me...

back on topic... The forum had instituted the limitation on picture sizes back when people were still using dialup and 2G (GSM) was just being widely released in the US. This limitation still exists as people like me are using mobile hotspots and/or tethering with limited data plans. There is also no desire by the admin and mod staff to allow the forum to get to the point where everybody is posting multi-megabyte images which really don't apply to the subject (post) at hand or having distracting animated GIFs as signatures. There IS a sub-forum here that does allow for larger pictures ( http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewforum.php?f=21 ) where you can show off your systems.

I didn't know that the W810i supports RDS! I need to try using that, if I can find that pop-port to 1/8" TRS adapter...

I always hated those adapters on any phone.

You need to connect your W810i to a pair of head phones as antenna.
Alternatively, short circuiting pins on it also works, and there's not much difference

@rkawakami

lol okay, I'm relatively new to this forum, didn't really look back into posts from 2007 XD
Anyway, have you tried using Omnius for SE to recover your W810i? My W995 was dying after 3 years of torture and I just flashed it recently, and it's almost as new now ;)
Alternatively, I think SEtools or FAR also works with DB2010 phones (including W810i), they are free but I'm not sure if one can still find those online.>_<
And I just got myself a NIB C905 for collection for $150 (kind of crazy I know).... the last and the best of the legendary cyber-shot phones.
I've refused to get a smartphone for 8 years since the first iphone came out... was holding on my W995 and C905 until last year... mainly because there was finally something better than my modified C905 in camera, the Nokia Lumia 2010.... But still I love C905 and K810i, it's not comfortable using Lumia 1020 to take pictures.

back on the 50k limit.....
1. Expensive data cost is not a fault of forum memebers who wanna post large pictures, it's a fault of US telecom companies and management :P don't you agree? If the rules set 10/20 years ago are still applicable, that is also an indication of no/little improvement of American wireless telecoms (relative to the rest of the world) whatsoever.
For the same amount money I spend every month, I have only 1GB data on one line here but back in UK I got 2GB+10GB on two lines, and in China I can get at least 3-5GB p/m on two lines. Since this forum is a relatively international forum which is supposed to "accommodate everybody", I don't think it's fair to apply the rules that are only suitable for America and Africa to the rest of the world, isn't it?
(please don't take any offense here, I am just p***ed off by 9-11 service charge, the device insurance fee and all sorts of hidden charges AT&T ripped me off during the first few months)

TBH, I think one picture warning (probably with the number of pictures) in the title is enough. and that warning, sadly, is perhaps only applicable to members in the US.

2. Although irrevalent pictures are limited, relevant pictures are severely limited too, e.g. the guide to Quad Core mods on T61 or George's 2nd review on T50, it's just too much of a hassle opening every single picture manually, especially when browsing forum on a computer. Also I don't think more than a quarter of those are affected are actually irrevalent.

3. There is another way: 51nb has another domain: m.51nb.com, which is the site for mobile phones that does not load pictures automatically. On the regular 51nb site: fourm.51nb.com, pictures are loaded automatically. And you can choose whether or not to go to the desktop site on the mobile site and vice versa.

But obviously, I'm non-US citizen and I'm not in the admin group, my words don't count :jhem:

I use the factory headset that plugs into the bottom of the phone (HPM-70). Only a few $$$ on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/260493888962 RDS does require a fairly strong signal.

@RMSMajestic: Have no desire to fiddle with the firmware of my phone. It's been working great for many years (yesterday was the only problem I've had). I use the phone, text, alarm and rarely the camera. I don't have any .MP3 files on it and don't connect it to the data system.

Yes I know that the US is highly deficient and/or expensive at broadband data connections when compared to most of the rest of the developed world; from cell phones to DSL to cable. I recently dropped my AT&T DSL (1.2Mbps/384K) in favor of Comcast (20Mbps/5Mbps) for roughly the same price ($40/month). Some of the limitations in service is due to the companies not wanting to spend the money to expand. I think most of it is because of the municipal agreements (aka, monopolies) that exist between the cable/telephone companies and local government.

The T-Mobile plan I have with my hotspot runs $45/month for 5GB. At least it has roll-over. I've already exceeded my 5GB for the month and now I'm tapping the roll-over stash for the next 10 days. I went with a mobile WiFi unit, as opposed to using a smartphone, because I can connect to the WiFi with anything I want. And yes, I know that some phones can act as a hotspot. I just didn't want to change from my W810i.

The comfort of viewing images in the page without having to open it in a new tab, outweigh the need to make everything suitable for older phones, specially when the percent of who would prefer smaller image size are getting smaller everyday.

There are smart phone browsers that could disable image auto loading, for those who really need this.

Another solution would be to raise the limit from 50KB to 1MB :D

Just wondering, is there any sony ericsson fans here?
I've had the pleasure of using an old K800i from around august last year to February this year.
I have to say it's a nice little phone with a decent camera and amazing xenon flash bulb. :D
Its main downsides are the proprietary connector for audio, and the screen that isn't usable under direct sunlight.

Another small issue was that the keys were slightly smaller than I would have liked. I got used to it though: it's nothing compared to the frustration whenever I try to use my sisters' android phones. :P

I was forced to stop using it because the 3, 6, and 9 keys stopped working, and the nav stick started acting funny (down would also trigger a click around 20% of the time). Add those to its existing problems like: weak speaker even at max volume (apparently it was a common issue), battered casing (camera cover won't lock), I'm left with a phone that's technically still repairable but infeasible due to cost and availability issues (our country was very Nokia-centric before the smartphone boom). :(

For now I'm back to my Nokia C3-00 QWERTY phone, which I really need to replace though I have no idea what to replace it with.
Definitely not a smartphone though. :P

@axur-delmeria
lol the epic sony-ericsson joy stick problem....
my solution is some WD40 spray on it (need to disassemble the phone though)
K800i/K810i is one of the hardest to disassemble ever, it's just so easy to break some plastic bits.

@hhhd1
I totally agree.... also in my good old sony ericsson there is a setting where I can disable "show picture"

If you don't have any MP3 files, k750i might be a better option for you (W800i, W810i, K750i, W700i all have similar hardware, and you can flash one with the firmware of another)

US landlines are not as bad as wireless ones. I got verizon FiOS for $49 pm (50Mbps/10Mbps). But what I'm annoyed with is that either US government/ISP or both of them wanna kill off P2P torrenting

Few years back you could get a cheap refurbished phone on eBay (from China, of course). That's how I did get the T39 I was using until the 2011. Best phone I've ever had (second was CMD-J6). Battery was not original (and kinda sucked) but I found some new old stock for 50 USD that was working like a charm.

I did a search and they have some nice K800i for sale.

As long as the admins of this forum are part of that smaller percent, it doesn't really matter how small it gets, does it?
