How the PM System Works?

Hey guys,
Pretty new to the forum and have been doing a lot of reading, lots to learn in the old threads
I have a question about the PM system though, I notice when I PM people that my msgs stay in the “Outbox” folder for most of the day and finally move into the “Sent” after a long time.
Does it take a long time for the forum to send PM? or does it only move into the “Sent” folder after the person reads the PM?
Has me worried there’s a long delay before people get my msgs and that can be a problem when working out a deal with forum members.
