Moderation

#1 Post by GomJabbar » Mon Aug 27, 2007 9:33 am

I would like to make a public apology to wearetheborg. I am not being forced or coaxed to do this. It is of my own volition. I got carried away a couple of days ago in my zealousness for ThinkPads.

wearetheborg started a thread titled: "A negative review of the X61t tablet". The initial post contained only a link to a thread started by Chaz at forum.tabletpcreview.com. I do not know Chaz from Adam. I was not happy with the title of the thread and the link to an unknown author on a different website. I thought wearetheborg was only trying to cause trouble. When I got after wearetheborg for starting that thread, he/she responded that Chaz was the lead moderator at NBR. When I looked at the link at forum.tabletpcreview.com, Chaz was not listed as a moderator. wearetheborg posted several links to verify the credentials of Chaz in another thread he/she started in this forum, but by that time I was just angry, so I deleted those links out of his post and locked the thread. I never even looked at the links.

Well, a little uproar started in the moderator's forum over all this. Some were siding with me, while others thought I was way out of line. The two threads that I am referring to above were moved by an administrator out of the general forums into the administrator's forum, where the even the moderators do not have access.

Now that I have calmed down a little, I see that wearetheborg was within his rights to post what he/she did. I still am not happy with the title of the thread started in the X6x forum, but that is just me. I eventually did see that Chaz is indeed the lead moderator over at NotebookReview.com. As such, his opinion is not to be lightly dismissed - as I dismissed it. Nevertheless, I am still confused by the relationship between TabletPCReview.com and NotebookReview.com, as there is a tab at the top of the page that links one with the other. On the one hand it seems like different areas of the same site, and on the other hand it seems like two different sites that just have links to each other. Chaz is a moderator in one, but not the other.

One of the administrators stated the following to me just yesterday: "Anyone can say anything negative about ThinkPads in this forum, and it's perfectly OK as long as they do it in a civil manner. To be an honest and open forum, we have to take the good with the bad about the product..."

I still would prefer negative content from other sites not be brought here, but it is not up to me.

wearetheborg, again I wish to apologize for losing my cool with you, and for not spending more time to investigate what you posted.

Anyone who can write something like this has a generous spirit and deserves respect when he can see his own errors. Kudos from me!

Its cool, I dont wish to create divisions amongst mods. I do not wish to alientate the thinkpad community.
To all mods: I may post comments on negative aspects about thinkpads, but please note that does not mean I'm saying thinkpads are bad. Thinkpads are my favorite machines in the 14-15" market.

GomJabbar, it was negligent on my part to post that negative review in that 1)Thread title was wrong, as you said it was vista's fault; and 2)I did not make it clear who Chaz was originally. I had just seen that post by Chaz, and I was so taken aback, I linked it here immediately without much thought..

I was really afraid that this was a forum where negative comments about thinkpads would be censored blindly, but this episode and GomJabbar's post have restored my faith. I request that future posters be also given this benefit of the doubt (perhaps be asked for clarifications ?)

I shall also try to be more careful henceforth.

PS: TabletPCReview.com and NBR (together with a few others linked at the top ) are sister sites, same owners. The mod team and users differ though.
Anyone who can write something like this has a generous spirit and deserves respect when he can see his own errors. Kudos from me!

A public apology done by a moderator.

This is an example of a professional moderator. Kudos to Dave..
