Unable to post private message

I have been trying to send private message for over half an hour
and always get message
Failed sending email :: PHP ::

DEBUG MODE

File : emailer.php

what gives?

This thread will be moved to the comments/suggestions area, but FWIW, my last post before this one came up with the same error message, but the post still showed up like it should.

EDIT TO ADD: Same thing with this post.

Thanks for posting, I have notified the senior admins about this issue.

edit:
I just checked, and I think that the PMs are reaching the outbox (and eventually the sentbox). I do not know why we have this error as of now, but I have reported the issue.

I repeatedly had errors trying to send PM's earlier, and now it happens when I try to post to a thread too

System is generating the error message but it appears that posts and PMs are being delivered. If in doubt, open another browser tab and check your Outbox or thread and see if the message went through. Going back and re-submitting the post/message may result in duplicates.

edit: Just like this message.. I got the error line 234 message but I went back in my browser and refreshed the thread and this post made it.

Yep, I got about 10 messages all are the same. Also, the notifications for new message received are not working...

It seems that the e-mail sending system is down, and hence the error messages, but everything else actually works fine. Posts are made, private messages are sent.

Of course, when people try resending the message 20 times because of the "error", private message mailboxes are going to fill up, which is going to cause more errors and more confusions.

edit: to clarify. You will see the error message if
a) sending private message to a user who has requested to be notified of new PMs by email (I believe this is the default)
b) replying to a thread where an earlier poster has either
- checked the "Notify me when a reply is posted" box (default is unchecked), or
- has "Always notify me of replies" checked in their profile (I believe the default is unchecked)
