Seriously annoying forum GUI element: The pale scrollbar

#1 Post by A.K.A » Wed Dec 12, 2007 7:07 pm

Dear Bill and other head honchos,

This is a great place, and in all deference to your efforts, I just want to request one slight mod to the GUI: PLEASE use some other style scrollbar! This sounds like a winge, but it's really annoying.

I'm running Vista and IE7. The scrollbar at this forum is blank. I have to squint and strain to see the bottom of it, and there's no sign of its top. :( I have no idea when I plant my cursor there whether I'm going to catch hold of it or not. It often takes 2-3 tries. It's not my preferences that are the issue: Every other scrollbar I've encountered on the web has been eye candy in this config.

Shouldn't be a big deal to change it, right?

Many thanks for taking this on board.

May I suggest you try Firefox until this issue will be/has been addressed?

I'm pretty sure that this forum is running the default "subsilver" theme that was installed with phpBB out of the box. I don't think there have been any changes to it other than the header, so I expect that there are many, many other forums that will present the same problem to you (or to any other Vista/IE7 users with your colour config). It's just luck that you haven't run across them yet. For instance, do you see the same problems with Wim's BIOS forum?

Having said all that, I'm pretty sure that there is a specific set of CSS codes controlling scroll bar styling in IE, and it can probably be adjusted to affect only IE 5 and 6, or be removed entirely. I will bring your suggestion to the attention of Bill and the other "head honchos". While such changes may seem simple on the surface, they would require changing code that hasn't been touched in years and therefore it is a bit of a deal: they would require some testing and additional time -- something that is in VERY short supply around here!

That is the theme that's running.

I'm running IE7 on Vista with default settings and its clearly visible. Perhaps your display settings or theme choice is the problem.

Cheers,

If you do not like websites taking charge of your browser's UI elements (and rightly so), use a browser which lets you disable these "features".

i have been using vista on my T60p for quite a while and have not experienced this disappearing scrollbar problem..

also, no one else has complained..

SO..

i THINK it might be a setting on your computer..

as others have already said, the code for this forum has not been modified from the original in the "theme" department..
sub-silver it is..
thus changing it would require a whole lot of time and knowledge/skills i do not currently have..

there IS a new (ver 3.0 phpBB) version that has just gone gold..
if it has some features i would like to incorporate i MIGHT take on the challenge of that update..
but not for a while until the time issue is resolved..

OH!, thanks for caring and the kind comments..
