Why is this posting locked?

This seems like a normal request for help to me, but is locked. Any idea why?

I locked it, it's a duplicate thread, if you scroll exactly two threads up (at this very moment) in the same conference you'll notice:
ThinkPad R31...broken. Fixable?.

Yes, thanks... I noticed that now. One thing puzzling, though... why lock a duplicate thread rather than simply removing it?

A guess it's several reasons:
- leaving in place and locked means that the OP can still see it
- that prevents he/she from calling a mod/admin and complaining that one of their posts was "disappeared"
- and with a (normally left) moderator note attached, the reason becomes clear why it's locked
- which means he/she knows not to do that again.
