Random Downtimes

I experience random down times of this forum, typically lasting from 1 minute to 45+ minutes. Is this a server provider issue?

Yes, there are occasional "blackouts" due to server problems. I treat them as a good excuse to get up from the keyboard and look around the "real world" and interface with the carbon-based lifeforms in my vicinity

Hmmm.....

LOL!

Ray probably meant 'interact'

Hmm... I see where some people may get the wrong impression

....
So yes, "interact" might have been a better choice of words.
In any event, there was at least one more interruption earlier today. Wonder if the net traffic is getting bogged down in the MidWest???

I am on the east coast and I experienced the same thing today. I use OpenDNS and received a message from them that the forum.thinkpads.com server was offline. So OpenDNS saw that there was a problem as well. FWIW, I was able to browse the other sites I frequent ok.

I've been having problems for the last few days and just assumed it was Charter (I would blame global warming on Charter if I could!).

The problem was visible also here in Europe, altough I don't remember the exact time, I can say that the
www.thinkpads.com was resolved but forum.thinkpads.com wasn't.

i too have noticed brief and not-so-brief outages..
there WERE some carrier issues that were resolved last week (around the time of this OP)
if ANYONE notices such things again, please note the time and date and add a post to this thread..
with a few of these and dates/times i am sure i can get the server owner's attention..

There was a slight outage a few minutes ago (has been reported in the sticky). I also have noticed within the last week or two that the system time is about 10 minutes slow. I'm synchronized to NIST (and eBay

) via US Naval Observatory, Washington DC and the
DS Clock program.

Down August 1, 2008, approximately 02:20 to 02:35 EDT (GMT-4); may have started earlier.
Ping to the host was working fine, but none of the forum pages would load.
edit: that's my system time, which is within few seconds of the internet time servers. The board's time runs a bit late.

um, not to sound like an idiot or anything, but...
what's the point of listing the outages here? i mean, it would be useful if i could check it when i can't connect, but seeing as it's hosted here...
is there something we can do to help? if the server is need of replacing/repair, it should be easy enough to get some money together from the forum members, you can get a decent dual nocona xeon rackmount for about $400 or so on ebay.
i haven't been around here for very long, but i'd definitely contribute a little $$$ to keep this place running.

As outlined in Bill's post above:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 972#436972
this thread is more of a way to document the outages so he has some ammunition when discussing this with the owner of the server.
As far as the $$$ is concerned, there's a "donate" link at the top of each page

.
And here's where Murphy's Law applies... it seems like there was an outage when I first tried to submit this post! (1320 to 1335 PDT).
