One question though - will this new forum eventually be moved to the "old" URL address (forum.thinkpads.com)?

Please excuse the construction workers as they come and go. Things will probably suddenly appear (like smilies); hopefully nothing will disappear .

The url will probably be changed very soon, its not a hard thing to do. This looks like its on the host's website url right now. I already see some of the cool new things that are now available to us now. Hopefully in the next few days and weeks we will see this website become complete with graphics and all.

BTW. Nice job. I just recently completed a database class and I know how troublesome it can be to move EVERYTHING to a new DB system.

Yeah, I should have read more first my question was answered in another topic:

Eventually, the URL will be the same. Bill needs to flip a few switches, and then it will need to propogate.

It was mostly Bill and the guy he hired doing all the database conversion work - the rest of us just cheered him on and tested each iteration as he made progress.

Hi,
Great new forum.
I would suggest to save on vertical space.
eg. after the signature in each post the little square buttons on the right side cause some vertical space wasted,
and also on the top of each page between the grey master header and the first post there is alwas a lot
of vertical space to regain.

I'm having a bit of trouble. O_o The forum isn't sending me notifications. I went to set my email, but it's saying that "the password does not contain the required characters". O_o I've tried many different combinations of letters and numbers...

And I can't stay logged in!

Otherwise, it's great! Well worth the switch and initial troubles, methinks...

I wonder what makes some people say that. I figure any DB that only needs to handle 250+ concurrent connections or so should run like butter on any modern semi-decent dual core server. I mean load the sucker up with RAM and move on with your life.

I only mention this because I built tons of servers for mid to large business and while some do get crazy esosteric in terms of 8 CPU's, 8+GB of RAM, RAID 5 SAS and so on, the bulk of them are quad core Xeon's with 4GB of RAM and dual 500GB HD's mirrored. Surely this type of setup should be more than enough to run a simple DB.

I've done my years in the trenches admining SQL Server and so on. I've written tons of cross platform programs (mostly for use in-house by clients). I have yet to see one monolithic DB crush a server. I've even run a multi-line BBS back in the 90's.

So yeah I hope any 2 year old or newer machine should be able to handle to what amounts to text, some code and some user permissions.

The board looks great and certainly feels somewhat more responsive. My only questions is why does the page header not line up properly with the edges of the post windows? It rolls from egde to edge magazine style whereas the rest of the page has margins.

Congrats to Bill on getting this up and running. I've been keeping tabs on the status as reported to date and I was beginning to think that it wouldn't be ready for a tad more longer. Nice work on getting it up and running.!!!

i came unglued when the guy working on this with me moved the whole site and i was not told..
went to grab a file and ..nothing was there.. i thought OHHHH! sheeeeeeeetttt

what i want for the near future is a chat ability though it was not much used on the webboard forum that went away in 2004..

I haven't visited the forum regularly or posted in a while, but I have to join the others in giving my kudos to the new forum design. Function is efficient and more streamlined, seems like there are extra features, and of course the look is vastly improved. From what little I've read it seems like there's been some issues with the migration, but hopefully the pain was worth it.
