Log me on automatically each visit - not working?

As with the old website, I would log in and check the box. It worked I assume by using cookies.

This new version however, does not keep me logged in even though I check the box. If I close my browser (IE) or open a new tab, I have to log in each time. Am I doing something wrong, is there a bug in this version of phpBB, or is this just the way it works

Same here. It is not using cookies for some reason, even though it should be. In the meantime, the login is kept in the url's sid code. Log in, then bookmark the main page with the sid code in it, then whenever you use that bookmark you'll be logged in.

I think the admins are aware of this and (hopefully) working on fixing it.

You're right, its not using cookies, I checked too. I looked at the temp internet files and found the "old" forum.thinkpads.com cookie. I closed IE7, ran CCleaner and verified that all the cookies were gone. I restarted IE7, went to the thinkpads main page, logged in with the box checked and then looked at the cookies again in temp internet files. There was no cookie for forum.thinkpads.com.

I'll try your method next.

EDIT: Yup, your suggestion worked. I have it set up as a button on the Links toolbar. I just copy/pasted the URL with the sid into the properties and it came right back keeping me logged in. It even retained the cockatoo icon

Well, maybe not. I put my PC to sleep last night like I usually do and when I started it this morning, opened IE7 and used the link with the sid, I had to log in again.

EDIT: the sid number changed from yesterday to today which is why it doesn't work any longer.

The problem here is that forum sends cookie saying it's for imwebd.com domain:

Set-Cookie: phpbb3_3f28k_sid=ae64ef423164baf7b1b6e89e0d06d2a4; expires=Mon, 11-Jan-2010 03:54:55 GMT; path=/; domain=imwebd.com; HttpOnly

(this is what I received from forum.thinkpads.com webserver)

As such, it does not get saved for forum.thinkpads.com (and probably not even for any other domain, as security restrictions in current browsers forbid that AFAIK) and phpBB seeing it was not saved pushes the session id to url. Permanent login requires another cookies, which highly probably come with wrong domain designation too... should be somewhere in phpBB config perhaps.

EDIT: Confirmed, at imwebd.com/~thinkpad/forum the permanent login works and session id does not appear in urls.

I've just compiled a list of changes which I believe are needed for the forum's server/cookie settings and emailed them to Bill. Basically it looks like the cookie domain, domain name and script path may need adjustments, at least in my opinion. For anyone with more knowledge about phpBB forum settings, maybe you can correct me. Here's what I am proposing:

ACP/Server Configuration/Cookie settings/Cookie domain
This forum is: imwebd.com
Possible fix is: forum.thinkpads.com

ACP/Server Configuration/Server settings/Domain name
This forum is: imwebd.com
Possible fix is: forum.thinkpads.com

Ray, the fixes for the first two should just be: thinkpads.com
The word forum is just one of many subsidiary possibilities of a website (like www. or forum. or home. or john. etc.).

I don't know what the last one could/should be, but I think you are correct.

I a related problem. I have only been a member a few days. I've been using my wife's Dell XPS\Vista Home\IE7 laptop to resolve my Thinkpad problems. When I first joined on Friday and logged in everything worked great. But something changed over the weekend. Now, every time I log in I get authenticated, but then I get redirected to Board Index page and I am logged out. I can't stay logged in.

It must have something to do with browser settings under Vista because it works on a different computer running WinXP and IE7. Sometimes I can maintain my logged in state; I don't know how. I just keep banging away and suddently I'm in.

Any suggestions, anyone?

Did you try going to http://imwebd.com/~thinkpad/forum -> log in with username and password + log me automatically checked -> back to index page -> add index page to favorites This is what worked for me (provided one is using the favorites feature in his/her browser).

I'm afraid it doesn't work again
I got thrown out after less than 2 hours.
Also, if you open a tab with a forum post, you have to log in again for that tab! Very annoying.

The old imwebd used to set 4 cookies, thinkpads sets only 3.
imwebd now doesn't set anything anymore.

Unfortunately I cleared that old imwebd cookie, so I don't know what it was set for.

Sorry to say that this fix made things worse. Now I have to log in each and every time that I visit the forum. Before the fix, using http://imwebd.com/~thinkpad/forum as the URL, things worked properly.

That's it? 8 hours? Has there been unusually high occurrence of forum account jacking by roommates or something?

I'd reason to believe it's LESS secure than having a longer life cookie, since you're transmitting plaintext passwords more often than any other forum I've ever been a part of.
