ok..
i'm going to shorten the session length to less than 8 hours..
now set to 1 hour..
also, i made some more adjustments to the server settings which were just plain incorrect..
please let me know if any of these changes helps or hurts..

Bill, the cookie problem is still there. If anything I'd suggest increasing the session length to greater than 8 hours than to some value less than 8 hours. The lower the value = more times to logon.

Bill:
The cookie problem still exists, both on IE7 and Firefox. Neither browser logs back in on its own; you have to log in each time that you visit the site.

No OS difference here. Automatic login does not work on either of my Vista machines or on my XP tablet. All machines run both IE7 and Firefox 3.0.5, and automatic login fails on everything, on either URL for the forum. Wish I could help...

try it now..
i made a tiny change to the cookie settings..
from SSL to non-SSL..
i have no idea how that got changed but if it all works for everyone, then that must be the culprit..

Looks like it's working OK now. Please make the session length 8 hours or greater as well. Thanks!

Well so far it seems to work again. Hopefully that was the culprit.
Thanks Bill.

This may be related to it (and also to users not getting a PM email-notification):
If your ISP does not officially support SMTP for php, you could try and use "localhost" as the SMTP Server Address and check "yes" to "Use SMTP Server for email" in the "Configuration" section under "General Admin" in the Administration Panel.
You may also need to go back into the "Management" section under the "User Admin" portion of the php Control Panel, look up the Administrator Username and go back in and give that Administrator a valid e-mail address. It is not set up by default and needs to be done in order for the SMTP mail function to work!

I received one topic reply notification email on Monday, but that was the last one. None since. I thought the automated email system was working again, but apparently not.

Logon is working dandy, but I still don't get any email notifications! (also see my posting 2 posts UP).

It worked for me yesterday, but has stopped working today. I've tried it on Vista 32 with IE7 and OS X with Safari, no luck on either at present.

i approved your change..
well, i reactivated your account when i saw you on the inactive members list..
i have been looking fo rthis location you talk about above but i can't find it in ACP..
just to check and see what email it has for me and if it is other than my usual system email..
why not sign up at billmorrow.net/phpBB3 and see if it will send you a notification email..

Sorry Bill, frustration got the better of me
I registered as RBS and got the activation email sent to the same email address that I always used on TPF before I made the change today.
Both the old and the new email addresses don't get email notification from TPF.
As the the SMTP info, I found that on another forum that discussed phpBB3 email problems.
That's all they had.

Make sure your ISP is not putting the emails into a spam bucket. I have been getting emails for every thread, even when the cookies were broken. I have a gmail account.

OK, I'm going to change my email for TPF again to one of my gmail addresses.
Hope some admin/mod approves me quickly so I don't get too many withdrawal symptoms
Edit: I changed my email address to "something"@gmail.com
I did NOT get thrown out of the forum, but instead got a message in
red:
excessive spambot attacks - complain to google or gmail - you may request an exception by emailing the admin. just ask..
and I continue to have access to the forum.
Curiouser and curiouser...
EDIT/UPDATE: I am supposed to get an activation email at "something"@gmail.com
once some mod/admin approves the change.
No such luck.
EDIT/UPDATE 2: apparently my email address change was not accepted (as perhaps expressed by the
RED message)?
Back to Square One?
