Meaning of a forum symbol

What does this symbol
mean left of threads in the forums/new posts view as opposed this regular one
? (They also come in the "no new posts in this thread" flavor
and
.)

The flashing means an active (popular) thread.
Look at the bottom of the forum page.

It means that that specific thread is "popular"...
Mods will give you details, but there is post/view threshold after which the symbol starts to shake...

Thanks for pointing this out. I have to admit, I've never looked that far down.
