How do I turn on "post contents ballon" ?

#1 Post by dozer » Sun Jul 12, 2009 8:47 pm

"post contents balloon" is for lack of a better term...

What I'm talking about is when you roll your cursor down over the list of threads in a forum-index, and when you pause over a thread-title, a balloon pops open giving the first few hundred characters of the original post.

I find it a HUGE timesaver....especially noticeable on rural dialup.

I've not seen any setting for it in my profile.....yet I know this forum-soft can do it......most of the phpBB forums I participate in do it without me even having to turn it on.

Anyone?

thanks much!
Richard

I've never seen anything in the admin panel for something like that. Go ask one of the forums that have it where the setting is.

I think this feature isn't built into phpBB by default. Quick googling revealed that there is a MOD that adds this functionality:
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... &t=1257235
ThinkPad™ X201 / AFFS-120
i5-560M 2.67Ghz, 8GB RAM, Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD, Win 8 Pro 64-bit, UltraBase X200, ThinkPad Compact USB Keyboard,
Dell U2713HM (2560x1440, IPS), ExpressCard USB 3.0 (2 ports, flush), Nexus 7+10

Thanks, yak!

Sorry, dozer - we can ask, but Bill is pretty resistant to installing mods as they sometimes cause trouble with the database.

thank you Yak....at least now I can call it by its right name!

"Topic Text in Mouse Over"

Jane, perhaps you can check it out?.....from that thread that Yak linked, it looks like it's been validated by the phpbb team.

ps; I may have been mistaken in saying "I know this software can do it because I've seen it on many other php forums".

That thread is dated just the end of 2008!

So apparently I'm confusing phpBB with another popular forum package that produces similar looking pages.

In any case, please do add it and give it a try....I think most people will like it...or at least be ok with it.

yak, thanks again for digging that up,

Richard

whups.....Jane, just saw your last post after posting mine above.

ok, but please mention to him that it saves a LOT of frustration and download-time for the 50% of the world still stuck without broadband.

It helps a lot with the sadly large number of poorly-composed non-informative subject-titles...

If you're using FF you can set it to turn off ToolTips in about:config.

Browser.chrome.toolbar_tips = false. I hate these and always turn them off as well.

hi Fred, sorry for the delayed reply......for some reason, I'm not getting thread-activity notification-emails reliably.

We're talking opposites here.

I WANT the topic-text balloons.....

ps; also, in the case of these particular 'balloons', it's not something one sets in the browser, but rather, is a 'plugin' for the BBS software itself....which Bill would install on the server.

thanks for your reply,

Richard

The FedoraForum.org forum offers this feature. FedoraForum.org uses vBbulletin software.
