Favicon

Can I request a favicon? In Firefox 3.5.1 I just get an ugly empty page icon. I like to cram lots of websites into my toolbar with icons only & no description.

Some time ago there was the eagle. Then it disappeared from my FF for some reason. I don´t know if it was FF or windows 7 or the forum upgrade or all together, but it was nice and I would love to have it back. I´m still looking for any hints on this.

Thanks,

Marin

You can use favicon picker 2, then use your own.

That Favicon Picker only shows the favicon in your bookmarks, NOT in the address bar.
I've been missing that too. But this is a setting in the Forum software. Bill????
And it was not an eagle but a Cockatoo or Cockateel or some such parrot.

I don't care about it in the address bar. I only wish to differentiate them on the bookmarks sidebar.

Bill has now fixed this, and the favicon should now show up where you normally expect it. You may need to empty your browser cache for the favicon to appear.

Please let us know if the favicon still does not show up for you -- and let us know the exact browser version you are using.

Phil.

Not showing in FF 3.0.11 even after emptying cache and restart of FF.
UPDATE: after rebooting the PC, the Favicon is now showing. THANKS.
It does show OK in IE 7.

And while we're at it, since 2-3 days I don't get PM notifications any more

Not showing up in IE7. I looked at the page source code, and there isn't any of the typical FavIcon code in the head section...

Before favicons were "standardized" and appropriate LINK tag was introduced into the HEAD section of HTML, the icon was simply put in the root directory of the server and called favicon.ico. The browser simply tries that if no favicon info is found in the HTML. That's the case here:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/favicon.ico

Honestly, I never was able to see a parrot, or any other bird, on this favicon. It looks like some x-ray picture of a head or something to me.

This is a stylized version of "Peachy" if I remember correctly, one of Bill Morrow's favorites!

Are you sure you cleared your browser cache fully? You may need to reboot as well as empty the cache. It shows up on my version of IE7 now, and it didn't used to.

yak's explanation of the favicon code is correct. By default, if you provide no details about the favicon in the <head> of your web page, then IE7 and practically all other browsers will look for a file named "favicon.ico" in the root directory.

You are right. I have never looked so carefully into it, it appears quite small on my WUXGA screen :)
