Sorry if this is in the wrong place or I have missed something but all my topic icons have the usual black and white page icon but it has a black dot on it.
I have looked in the legend and it doesn't say anything about it.

That means it's a topic you posted a message in.

What do you mean by message.
What it is is just a normal post like this one but this one has a black dot.
I cant see any other posts with the black dot on.

Every one of the threads that you have posted in will have the black dot next to the orange (new posts in thread) or white (no new posts in thread) icon. It is simply a way of identifying the threads that you have replied to (like this one). If you have not posted a message (reply) to the thread, then no "black dot".

I tried to find a list of phpBB subsilver2 default icons and their meanings but have come up empty so far. If I do find one, I'll post it here.

No, it appears for everybody but only for their own posts/threads. Everybody will have a different view of the icons depending upon their participation in the threads.

For example, if you click on the link "View your posts" (located near the top of the message list), every one of the threads you see listed will have a black dot next to them.
