Outside of the mods, admins and the 20,000th member, we've always used feathers for the different ranks.

I too would like to see this feature enabled, gives some personality to people...
On a related note, looking for user number 20000 (search 20000 or 20,000)... can seem to find by searching for an announcement post or using phpbb...
User with ID 20000... no peachy logo
http://www.thinkpads.com/forum/memberli ... le&u=20000
User List showing #20000 in list...
http://www.thinkpads.com/forum/memberli ... tart=19999
#20000 is a mystery to me
#50000 is getting closer... upto 44732 in user list... but past if going by user id which is 51084

I think Peachy's pic didn't survive the move to this server. Peachy was another one of Bill's birds.

Peachy's pic is someplace..
the forum avatar sometimes displays Peachy and sometimes not..
right now, in IE on this computer i have Peachy in each forum tab..
as for user avatars i have been thinking to discuss allowing users avatars..
so, i am listening for comments..

Just my 'one-feather' personal opinion -- using avatars for mods and admins only, along with the number of feathers ranking forum members, makes it easy to pick out the more experienced posters' comments and opinions --
which is an asset for a less-experienced forum member like me

The feathers are just a post count (which is shown in better detail just below them). Post count definitely doesn't define someone. Some 4 feather people I have seen on here have 90% of their posts in the marketplace. Some moderators while being
excellent mods, post more warnings or "post moved" comments then answers/comments.
Post count is no better then my shot down karma idea

Some people have been here for years and have a low post count, others joined in the past year with very high post count, and after reading for a bit I notice only some of them being quite helpful, not all, based on # of posts.
You also gotta look at where the poster posts most frequently... don't even ask me about the newest ThinkPads... ain't owned one, so unless it is a general OS/hardware question, I aint the guy. But move back to the Pentium I era... and I think I am pretty knowledgeable on ThinkPads.
Just my 3 cents

Again -- just my one feather question -- how would opening up avatars to the entire forum membership be helpful to understanding who's who on the forum? Post count alone doesn't show experience or knowledge, but it does show an involved forum member. As for mods posting warnings or posts moved, you gotta appreciate the time and effort involved in the upkeep of this excellent forum.
What I find amazing about this particular forum is that techie/experts who can "geek-speak" in several languages mix and mingle with those of us who are learning the inner workings of our thinkpads one step at a time. Anyone who sticks around for longer than a few months can easily pick up on the multitude of informational postings, as well as have an opportunity to share a thought or two if so inclined. It is not clear to me whether avatars for all would make the forum more confusing or just more fun and personal.

the feathers suit me fine.
if anything, i'd imagine that avatars would require additional attention from mods/admins. i've seen some boards where i've had to scratch my head in amazement at some of the avatars.
