ThinkCentre M58 CPU upgrade
I have a ThinkCentre M58 tower, witch was the last year of the Core 2 Duo desktops for ThinkCentre before moving to the Core i series. Right now my ThinkCentre has a stock LGA775 Intel Dual-Core Pentium Processor E5300 2.60GHz. I bought a LGA775 Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz for $10 to upgrade my tower to. The problem is When I installed the CPU "Did all the cleaning and new thermal paste" I get 3 beeps in a row that make 12 beeps total, so 4 3 beeps. I reinstalled the stock CPU and its working fine now. I did a test and removed my Core 2 Duo out of my ThinkCentre M55e tower and has the same specs as the Core 2 Duo only it is a E7300 2.6GHz. Installed it and got the same beep error. Not sure why this motherboard is not accepting a Core 2 Duo CPU?

Re: ThinkCentre M58 CPU upgrade
1. Have you checked if it has any BIOS updates?
2. It's possible that the processor is defective.

+1 for bad CPU.
Why not update to a nice Quadcore, such as this: Q9550, 2.83GHz, 1333FSB, 12MB

What about the M55e Core 2 Duo? It works fine on it's board. I'll try to see if there is a bios update. The latest is 2009.

Re: ThinkCentre M58 CPU upgrade
I already got it, but thanks for the link. The latest was 5/7/12 and I installed the bios and reinstalled the C2D and it works now.

Re: ThinkCentre M58 CPU upgrade
Ah, so it was a BIOS issue. Good thing it worked out in the end! A Q9550 would've been nice on that machine, though I dunno if it's work the extra power consumption and heat.

Re: ThinkCentre M58 CPU upgrade
Not sure if this is the same machine but is the same model.
I own 3 of these machines.
I just fully maxed out this ThinkCentre M58 tower. It showed on the official IBM website that these can handle the Intel Core 2 Quad. So I bought the highest CPU which was the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.0GHz. 12MB cache. Got it for $45. The machine was New when I bought it and came with a Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 2.50GHz
The 2 CPU specs if want to know.
(https://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/502/I ... E5200.html)
I updated the bios to the latest and was able to max at 16GB RAM. Got a WD 1TB SSD and just has a Nvidia EVGA GeForce GT 640 GPU. The PSU is a EVGA 600W
I got the CPU installed and powered it on and nothing on the display. So I removed the GPU first and ran with VGA. It posted and got to the desktop and reading the Core 2 Quard CPU. So far the CPU is good.
The Problem is the GPU isn't posting video. The fan spins but nothing. I reinstalled the Pentium Dual Core and the GPU back in and the card read. Tested another cpu, a Core 2 Duo and same it read. So I am guessing the PCIe rail isn't getting enough power. This core 2 Quad is using 95W compared to the Pentium Dual core and core 2 at the 65W. This GPU doesn't have a 4-6 pin power plug and is just getting powered through the PCIe slot.
