I've been out of the loop of PC upgrades since the starting of the Intel Core i3, i5, i7 came out. My ThinkCentre has the Intel Core i3 with 4GB of RAM and a Nvidia GeForce 960 4GB and been running things nice and smooth still. It came with a 500GB Windows 8 Pro 64-bit and when first bought got a 1TB 2nd HDD with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.
Not sure what gen the ThinkCentre M82 Core i3 it has, but was wondering if a 7th gen would work and if they kept all the i series the same socket sets now with processors today. Would like to put in a i7.

Re: ThinkCentre M82 Processor upgrade to 7th Gen
M82 is from the Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge (2nd and 3rd generation) so no you can't put a 7th Gen Intel CPU in there. You need to change at the very least MB, CPU, RAM and possibly OS.
CPUZ is a good tool.
Every 1-2 generation Intel have been changing sockets. On top of that there's a switch to DDR4 RAM too.

If your M82 is a mini-tower model, put in an Ivy Bridge i5 or i7 and maybe upgrade the CPU heatsink. It'll be good for a few more years.
