Thinkcentre M58p MAX CPU and RAM support

#1 Post by Bready_To.Toast » Wed Nov 15, 2017 2:06 pm

I Have recently purchased a thinkcentre M58p and i want to know if this will support a Q9650? it currently has a Q9400 in it and i would also like to know is it true that all Thinkcentre M58p's support 12GB of ram and a specific model of thinkcentre supports 16GB of RAM?

A top dog CPU for Thinkcentre M58p would be either a Q9650 or a Xeon X3363 if you wanna do socket mod (X5000/E5000 series won't work because of the limitation of Q45 chipset. X3363 is still a lot cheaper than Q9650, and runs at a lower TDP.

Of course, why recommend X3363 just because Q9650 runs at 3GHz yet the X3363 runs at 2.83GHz? This is what you get by paying for? Does not make sense and cost is still reasonable on Q9650, currently running around 57 to 80 each on ebay? 15W is not much to save on wattage running at 95W. Yet I already modded mine know that (Asus P5K) P35 is ancient, I can use X5470 3.33 on it for around 67 CDN from EBAY, right now using 3GHz E5450. Core 2 based processors needs all the frequency it can get as much as possible with modern websites unless is used as older software running only.

Still can mod P45 based Asus board and others as well and PCIe 2.0 support but still CPU based on core 2/core 2 Xeons will choke on dual graphics cards either HD4870 or HD5870. Or get HP XW8600 box but pricy and can run 1600FSB Xeons up to 3.4GHz and DDR2 800 ECC. Yet better value is go with HP Z420 or Z440 or Z620 due to more storage bays, Ivy Bridge means UEFI support for >2TB using GPT partitions, performance to support 2 GPUs. Also upgrade PSU wattage using motherboard harness adapter using standard ATX PSU to uprate wattage on Z420/Z440 series due to HP only offering of stock 600W PSUs. FYI: Dell's workstations with only 2 bays and 1 external bay. Or get saddled with 8x 8x even at PCIe 3.0 using any of 115x socket and too many, Z and H series chipset options, no ECC? Ryzen based processors (ALL) can do ECC and Treadripper processors can do 60 lanes for slots + 4 lanes for chipset while Intel more expensive tops out to 40 or 44 lanes depending and some do not have ECC either even insulting is some of socket 2066 processors can do 16 or 28 lanes?! That's with i7 and i9 and also these also is time to have ECC to compete with AMD (Threadripper is both proconumser and semi-workstation, for full workstation duty other option is EPYC with their excellent 128 lanes and ECC, still 128 lanes in dual processor as well.

I am not specifically saying that one is better than the other. Q9650 is faster and creates less compatibility problems, while X3363 is $20 cheaper and runs a bit cooler. While $20 doesn't sound much, it is 1/3 of the price of Q9650 on eBay!
The 15W delta of TDP does matter, if you wanna keep your core temperature below the Tjunction, which is around 71.4C, NOT 100C. This gets more important when you consider doing BSEL mod and FSB+CPU overclocking. I, for one, was able to overclock my X3363 all the way up to 3.2Ghz stable with my OptiPlex 755 OEM motherboard, 800mhz DDR2 and setfsb 2.2.

The T-junction is only a recommendation. Since this is an desktop, they were usually designed to handle 95W and more by overrate of 20% by engineering of the specific heatsink if the documentation says can support Q9650, then will be fine. The key is based on documentation of specific model. For example Dell 780 USFF cannot handle this due to limited power supply but SFF and DT, MT 780 can as long as PSU is 280W or 305W rated plus heat pipe heatsinks if available for specific models. The doc says positively yes for Q9650.

Honestly, if this computer documentation for Thinkcentre M58p states can handle Q9650, then go for it but I have not seen mention of case factor type like SFF, desktop or tower? Go for 16GB using DDR3 1333, easier to get! Not 12GB.

Just out of curiosity, I have an M58 full tower (9960-ALU) with E7500 (2.93GHz), Intel GMA-4500, (maxed out) 8GB RAM and W7-Pro.
It could run a quad Q8200 (and probably others) but I see no reason at all to even consider that.

RealBlackStuff, I don't think you should have no trouble with Q9650 as well in your thinkcentre M58 as well after reviewing pdf.

See if you can swap out PSU for 400-500W as well since this takes standard ATX PSU in this tower case.

Nah, I'd rather sell it than spend any money on that dust-gatherer.

While others say Q9650 or LGA775 in general, is too old for anything, I think Q9x50 and Xeons will still work perfectly for mid-range gaming. Some say those processors are best paired with GTX 750 Ti, I paired my OC Xeon X3363 with GTX 1050 Ti and for the games I tried (Rise of the Tomb Raider, GTAV, Witcher III), they all work perfectly in high, if not ultra settings with FXAA. GTAV does show CPU bottleneck, ROTTR shows both my CPU and GPU being completely tortured at over 90% usage most of the time, and GTX 1050 Ti completely bottlenecked X3363 in Witcher III with maximum 60% of CPU usage.
But yeah, if you want a budget PC today, sandy bridge or ivy bridge has better value and much more potential.
Or you can repurpose it into something like to your parents or kids or something like that.

Yeah you can do that, but I feel like you are better off leaving the original PSU inside and do regular cleaning and stuff. If you go for something like GTX 1060, it is highly likely that you will encounter system resource arrangement issues and driver just simply won't load.

So thinkpadcollection your saying 16GB of ram is possible? ill have to hold out on the RAM until the prices go down and I still have to get a T60 for school and parts for my T61p, but thanks for the help and form everyone else too

Yeah but not recommended. It is way off the sweet spot for the price and I doubt the price is gonna go down because DDR2 is never designed to have 4GB sticks

m58p is ddr3 4 slots.

DDR3 is no longer made for few years now even crucial no longer stock any even DDR3 ECC. I had to buy some from ebay from a good known sellers for any DDR3. DDR2 is still steady sticking around $50-70/4GB for DDR2 4GB modules, still can be had for pair of 4GB DDR2 800 on OEM brands around 100-150 CDN. Even DDR4 is very dear too. Just stick it and keep paying the ever-rising piper for your DDR3 stuff, just find a OEM brand from ebay and buy used or new. Hynix, Samsung, Micron/Crucial, Elpida, on the sticker with logo. Not just a name or generic.

Besides, anyone who is running 8GB with 7 or 10 is fooling themselves thinking is all grand for heavy use. All you get is about 5-6GB free, Not reserved with a firefox up with few tabs, not more than 6 tabs at most. Also Steam really likes 16GB, we had to reboot few every other times on 8GB haswell i3 3.6GHz just to get Steam console launched from desktop sometimes would not launch at all, Upping to 16GB fixed that.

I personally have no issues with 8GB for normal light use on notebooks due to cost reasons or had 4GB and needed to be bumped to 8GB right away to enable dual channel too. Once ready to spend, I will just give them two modules of 16GB total for dual channel performance too.

Do not run unbalanced 12GB pair. That is called asymmetric mode which part of it is dual channel then single channel mode if larger than 4GB in memory usage which is rather easy to do as already told about 8GB thing.
Ditto to 4 slot doing 4GB, 2GB, 2GB and 2GB or 4GB, 4GB, 4GB and 2GB, still asymmetric and hurts performance. Proper dual channel mode is within a 0 and 1 bank is install in pairs of same capacity and smaller one in matched pairs as well will be dual channel mode. I.E. 2GB,2GB and 1GB, 1GB or 4GB, 4GB and 2GB, 2GB, naturally or all 4 matched sticks even two pairs are one brand and other different brand of same capacity will work perfectly due to bank switching.

Oops my bad.
I personally think 8GB does wonders today. At least my blade AAA games run just fine with 8GB of DDR2. But yes I do have a practice to be very conservative in terms of multitasking because my laptop still have 2GB of RAM.
At the same time, I personally use Microsoft Edge and it's doing me fine with 6 youtube tabs open with barely 4GB of RAM usage.
RAM, just like other components, is more like a endless hole type of thing. You always want more if you don't get good practice.
I think if you already have 8GB in the config of 4x2GB sticks, just leave it as is and call it a day. Not worth throwing out your current sticks for expensive new 4GB ones.
If you have 2x4GB sticks, then you can do upgrade however you want to either 12 or 16.
