figuring out what Thinkcentre i bought!

#1 Post by beshad » Wed May 15, 2019 3:12 am

hey all,

just got me an old thinkcentre desktop (bought it only because i wanted the IBM keyboard which came with it!). i am trying to figure out what model/series it is:

is it M51? what year would it be from?

also seller told me they fitted a new DVD player a while back. out of these two in the picture, which one is the non-original one please?

it is in a decent cosmetic condition so i might keep it as floppy/CD burner for my Thinkpads. i just loved it if it didn't have the second third-party dvd burner fitted., everything else seems to be original from correct period.

A quick search for "Thinkcentre 8142" yields "M51". Wikipedia puts the M50 at 2003 and the M51 at 2005, so the M51 should be a 2004 model. Pretty ancient, hope it doesn't die of capacitor plague.
