Converting an old dove bar PS/2 mouse to USB

#1 Post by dhe » Fri Feb 07, 2020 10:27 am

Has anyone published any directions for converting an old PS/2 style mouse (yea.. the one that came with the PS/2 Series of Micro's) to USB Internally?

What's usually done is to use some kind of microcontroller board to convert the PS/2 signal to USB. Arduinos and compatibles with a native USB port (IIRC those based on the ATmega32u4) work very well, but may be too large to fit inside the mouse casing. There are others that use the ATTiny85 like https://github.com/uggima/ps2-mouse-to-usb. Some boards using this chip could be really small.

Addendum:

I realized that there's another way: buy the smallest USB to PS/2 adapter you can find, release the circuit board from its cover and try to stuff it into the mouse casing.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons
