Other: Because I also think homebuilt is the best solution (for me)and apart from that I quite like Fujitsu-Siemens-Pcs.
My desktop started as a mid to late 90ties Siemens-Nixdorf desktop, a true desktop that lies flat on the desk, and has been constantly unpgraded since I owned it, about 5 years or so.
At my university all desktops are Fujitsu-Siemens (FSC) and they appear to be really sturdy and can take quite some beating, build quality is also quite good. As for the keyboards, they are my absolute favorites (apart from my TP of course :D ).

I usually recommend Apple and Dell.

I prefer Apple, followed closely by IBM. A third distance is Compaq, NOT, HP. After that, I don't really care.

And for those Falcon Northwest, Voodoo, Alienware machines: A fool and his money are soon parted. Sure they are speedy and look great, but unless the box says SGI or something there is no way I am going to lay down $8K on one.
