M51 External modem problems

I can not seem to get a new USR 56K external modem to work on the M51 towers. I have tried a pci serial card which did not work either. The best I can do is to install a generic 56k modem and then update the driver to the USR but it does not communicate with the modem. We can only seem to get older generic modems to work. We have had software issues with internals which is why we do not use them. Has anyone gotten a new model 56k serial external to work on a M51 tower?
