Windows Vista and IBM 300PL

Hello All. I just wanted to let yo guys know of the success I have had with running Vista RC1 on a 300PL. The specs are as follows:

1.4 GHz Tualatin Pentium III (Upgradeware Slot 1 adapter)
512 MB Ram
120 Gig HD
NVidia MX 4000 Vid card in AGP slot (4x AGP slot)
Soundblaster SE sound card
Buffalo PCI G wireless card
Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card

Everything else is stock.

Any one else taken there IBM desktop to the extreme?

I did the Tualatin upgrade, ram upgrade and hard disk upgrade but not the rest. I still have the machine in the basement and it is still running Windows 2000. It never seemed fast enough for me, and I replaced it with a NetVista XP Pro desktop for daily use. The basement machine is still good for mundane tasks like rainbow table builds that can take days. ... JD Hurst

I think I've wasted (?) plenty of money getting my old PC300GLs and 300PL about as far as I can/want.

PC300GL #1 has 1GB of PC133 SDRAM running at CL2. It also has a Matrox P650 graphics card, a USB 2.0 card, and a NIC. The on-board sound works fine for me. I like the idea of not having external speakers and wires (less clutter).

Interesting that you have Vista running on yours.

Those 1.4GHz Pentium III-S processors still have a fair amount of muscle by today's standards, although the 133MHz bus does limit throughput.

Just about a year ago, I almost decided to get a 1.4GHz Tualatin and a Lin Lin adapter to upgrade my 600MHz 133MHz FSB Dell OptiPlex GX110 desktop (a 1999 model). But back then these processors were still very pricey, around $100 apiece on eBay, so I settled for the fastest 133FSB Coppermine processor (1GHz) available, which cost one fourth as much.

I got my Tualatin for $35 and seen them go for less than $50 on ebay. Its not the fastest machine running Vista but it makes a good test bed.

My primary desktop is an OptiPlex GX150 manufactured in October of 2001. The 1ghz Coppermine chip is fast enough for most of my needs but there are some areas where the system is a little poky. I just snagged a lot of 2 1.2ghz Tualatin PIIIs (w/ 512kb cache) for $25 (+ $6 shipping) and will hope that one will work in my system. I have another system (which also has a 1ghz Coppermine) that I know for sure will accept Tualatins so I'll try upgrading that as well.

My PIII chips arrived today and I installed one in my Dell OptiPlex GX150 and the computer's BIOS recognized it and it had no issues. Going from a 1ghz Pentium III Coppermine with 256kb L2 cache to a 1.26ghz Pentium III Tualatin made a much bigger difference in performance than I was expecting. I haven't done much testing yet but Windows booted much faster than it did before.

I'll try putting my other 1.26ghz chip into the other PIII desktop later today after I get back from a job interview.

Now I see that I mis-interpreted your prior post. When you said 1.2GHz Tualatin, I assumed it was a 1200/256/100 processor (I didn't catch the "512kb" part). Now I can clearly see you meant 1266/512/133. Glad it's working.

The 1400/256/100 chip I mentioned in my PM would definitely make your system run slower than the new 1.26GHz chips you just got.

Job interview went alright though I don't know if I'm going to accept the job. I'll hear back from the interviewer this Monday. He says there were other people lined up for the job, I didn't show explicit concern for that fact and I made it clear what I was getting out of my current job and that he has to top that. I'm predicting that they'll hire somebody with less experience and is more desperate for a job and thus willing to work for a lower pay.

As for the PIII's, my OptiPlex is running just fine but the other PIII desktop wouldn't take the other Tualatin I had laying around and I don't feel like investing in an adapter so the chip is going to sit at my desk unless somebody wants to buy it.

The specific reason I ordered the chips I got was because of the 512kb L2 cache.
