Is it possible to maintain idling a T41p machine, CPU undervolted with 0.716V, GPU undervolted (70MHz core and memory) to have the CPU a temp of 37C without the fan off for more than 5 hours at least?
In order to reduce the CPU temp on my T41p to less than 45C I've to activate the fan, Level 1 on TPFanControl. Considering my laptop have a special thermal compound (Zalman Super Thermal Grease) the CPU temp should be lower, I think, isn't it?

Good & bad news.
Try TPFanControl v0.18-Service on my Z60T (Intel 915 VGA).
Smart Mode & Manual Set speed work! Good.
The Only Problem is, It keep logging "acpiec Warning"
at Windows Event, Like 30+ / Sec. Rate.
Any Solution for this problem? If this can Solve,
It's a very useful utility for our Thinkpad!

Just in case any T23 users were nervous about the worrisome fan level 64, I have had no trouble with it whatsoever. It took a few glasses of SoCo to get me to do it, but outside of the increased fan noise, I suffered no ill effects. It took my CPU down to about 30C while running a P2P program, with APS and PCM around 35C. I imagine an idling system would have yielded most temperatures at or around 30C.
6500RPM is a beautiful thing.

The only working solution at this time is "hacking" the ACPIEC.sys so it will not populate the system event log.

Being nothing if not brave, and my trusty faithful R31 having taken to shutting down occasionally, accompanied by the smell of frying eggs
and SpeedFan 4.29 not giving meaningful answers ...
I tried Fancontrol.
On an R31 it reports only one temperature, which it thinks is CPU. That seems to be fixed at 80 C at the moment. The fan tends to run all the time, speeding up occasionally if I do something processor-intensive.
I'm not going to go the next step of trying to speed up the fan unless I get more heat problems - it's been fine for the past few days. Maybe the blast of clean air through the fan vent is all it needed.
Outstanding website - I only just found it (after 15 years with a variety of ThinkPads). Wish I'd known sooner!

Those are some pretty high temps to be getting in an R31. Dust buildup would be the logical assumption but 80°C is still getting up there in temps.
What are the kind of jobs done on idle on that R31?

I don't think I believe the 80°C, because it's absolutely stable, whereas the fan comes and goes, and SpeedFan 4.29 shows different results and a changing temperature. FanControl shows 80°C and SpeedFan says 40°C at the moment: I switched on ten minutes ago.christopher_wolf wrote: Those are some pretty high temps to be getting in an R31. The laptop doesn't run any jobs on idle (apart from the standard stuff that all XP machines do). System Idle is around 94-95% pretty much all the time.

I have my yellow and red temp warnings coming on at 60 and 65!
The whole point of this program, for me anyway, was not to have my ThinkPad going anywhere near 70C. I guess you like it hot!

@dsigma6
of tpfancontrol the advantage is you're able to decide, if you like it hot (and silent
) or cool (and noisy
). So far no probs with hot settings (checking by WinXP scientific calculator 99999999999!=?, 100% load as long as you want).
btw: fanlevel 1 in T23 (no function i. e. in A30
) is obviously not used by BIOS fan control, it's merely to hear with ~2000rpm, but cooling well when running no resource intensive applications as office progs.

Have you tried reading the temp with MobileMeter or NHC and seeing what that says?Keithj wrote: I don't think I believe the 80°C, because it's absolutely stable, whereas the fan comes and goes, and SpeedFan 4.29 shows different results and a changing temperature. Hallo everybody.
Just started to experiment with fancontrol and NHC
Have quite a few can’t read EC status; have set NHC monitoring interval to 15sec. and FC to 6 sec. To my way of understanding that should somehow allow FC and NHC miss each other while accessing EC.
There is one thing I am a bit confused though, EC read me file says if EC crash when fan is OFF it will stay OFF, what is of course hot situation. Still rebooting should get things back to normal ( BIOS fan control), right or wrong? If right then problem is really just a small nuisance provided it does not happen too often.
Can anybody confirm, or if wrong explain why.
Thanks in advance.

If you reboot, the EC simply manages the fan again as normal. It really isn't a big deal unless you are getting the system hot for an extended period of time in which you really need the fan.

All the warnings in the readme file sounded to destructive, so I figured, I better be safe than sorry.
Wouldn’t want to loose “The Last of the Mohican” i.e. “The Last of the IBM”

Thanks for that - I hadn't, but I have now. They both give identical readings - different from fancontrol (which always shows 80 C, even immediately on switch-on). Speedfan gives similar results, but over a wider range: the lows are lower, the highs are higher.christopher_wolf wrote: Have you tried reading the temp with MobileMeter or NHC and seeing what that says?
The chip temperature seems to go up and down randomly and rapidly between about 50 C and 90 C. I watched it for about ten minutes; at one point it went from 90 to 55 in about ten seconds, which amused me. I suspect whatever senses the chip temperature (or reports it) is defunct.
If I feel the case round the chip area, it's normally just warm to the touch. On the rare occasions that I hear the fan start, it feels a lot hotter.
I think I'll just leave it alone and let the fan take care of it. I back up regularly, so the excuse for a new machine wouldn't be all bad.

Program Freezing
Thanks so much- my fan is so annoying
But, I have some trouble running the program
I set it to active and the screen pops up with everything running fine. However, the program has difficulty changing the fan on my computer.
Here is what happens-- I click on manual and set it to zero (off) to see if this works. It beeps right away. Then for about ten seconds nothing happens. Then the arrow key on my computer turns to the hourglass and the fan utility says (not responding). It will not change from that. I then pressed Ctl-Alt-Dlt and the program then changes the fan setting and the fan goes off. What I have found out so far is that it only changes after pressing Ctl-Alt-Dlt (thus it wont work on smart mode). Does anybody know what this could be?
T43 2679-UN4 Intel Pentium III M XP
after running on smart mode for five minutes this comes up:
Warning: Can't read Status (possible conflict with other software)
what software could it be?

Re: Program Freezing
First, if you have a T43 you definitely don't have a p3-m! Are you running mobilemeter or NHC to monitor HD and system temps? That would explain the error.golbasche wrote:after running on smart mode for five minutes this comes up:

If you want, I can send you my fancontrol.ini file later today and see if it works for you. I'm also using a T43.

sorry- not the greatest with computers
My device manager says i hava a Intel Pentium M Processor
I'm not running any of the programs you mentioned. If you can Id be glad to see if your .ini file works. Maybe that'll help. I dont know. If not, then I'm giving up on this. It's not that big a deal to me to spend this long on. But thanks so much for the help.
