Maybe I could get one more request from you

Can the high fan speed (setting 64) be made to have the same behavior as the other fan speeds? So once it gets set it doesn't go back down to the next lowest fan speed until the previous temperature threshold gets reached? My thinkpad will keep bouncing back and forth between speed 64 and speed 7 frequently with the thresholds I have set.

edit (24 hours later): tested it to be a new beta : http://staff-www.uni-marburg.de/~schmitzr/tpfc_v051.zip (strange level setting in .ini to show the advantage, new parameters IconColorFan=0/1, Lev64Norm=0/1, both set to 0 will run like v0.50)

I had been testing over the weekend and it works great for me! Now my fan won't start speeding up for a second only to slow down and keep repeating. Thanks a lot! I like this program a lot.

Hi troubadix, I have replaced my main Thinkpad with a new T61. Very silent. Although I have found some issues or doubts regarding the temperature readings on your software against another reading software such as HWMonitor.

In NBR forums there's the Undervolting Guide:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824 suggesting the use of Orthos + HWMonitor + RightMark CPU Clock Utility.

I followed that guide to undervolt my T8100 45nm processor. Then installed TPFanControl v0.50. HWMonitor temperatures from the Cores 0 and 1 are different than the 'CPU' reading on TPFanControl.
TPFancontrol reads the THM0 value as CPU. In my opinion right now in the T61 is useless to control the fan because we're getting a totally different reading.
Here, take a look at this screenshot.


You can clearly see there's discrepancies on the CPU reading.

Yesterday I wiped the HDD that was preinstalled with Vista Home Premium and downgraded to XP Pro. I don't know now why my fan won't stop working once it read the threshold to start spinning.
I remember in Vista the fan would stop but in XP is not.

I've been working with your 0.18 version (quite old) on my T42p for quite sometime, and now I'm unfamiliar with the new values the TPFanControl has:

THM0 and THM1 are values of the ACPI philosophy http://www.acpi.info so called thermozones Few are computed by acpi.sys from many temp values delivered by embedded controller and taken from thermo sensors. Straight from the horse's mouth TPFanControl is reading and displaying embedded controller registers which content temps delivered by termo sensors without further computation. The locations of sensors are a secret of manufacturer. You can solve it by dismanteling your machine before using cooling spray and TPFanControl

My .ini of TPFC is set to stop fan at 60°C

btw: ealier versions of RMClock were said to be wrong with Santa Rosa

Looking at your screenshot is so weird that your THM0, THM1, Core #0, Core #1 and CPU values are all the same (58C).

I don't know and doubt that the location of the sensors vary from a 4:3 vs 16:10 models hence the discrepancy of the values. I noticed you use the CPUID Hardware Monitor PRO does the software include the personalized fields of information for Thinkpad users?

Right now I'm testing lowering voltages on my T8100.
TPFanControl V0.50 readings:
CPU 64C (this is the same on CPUID reading THM0

But can't figure out the difference among THM0 THM1 and Core #0 and Core #1. Which value should I be concerned with when checking how high the CPU temp shoots up when running Orthos.

Have a test http://www.cpuid.com/download/HWMonitorPro_101.zip (trial version)

The difference between temps of the two cores should not be that much as they are on the same dice. The values shown by TPFanControl (cpu) [or CPUID Hardware Monitor (core1/2)] are reliable and can be used to trigger the fan.

Interesting.

So we could say the values Core #0 and Core #1 trigger the fan, and the THM0 sensor is the overall temp of the CPU which is the one reported on TPFC.

Thanks for your help Troubadix, you made a nice piece of software for our beloved Thinkpad.

Last question, could you post/suggest your T61 TPFC.ini values you have. Is is OK to leave the CPU hovering the high forties (triggering the fan at 50C lets say) or leave it as it is. I found the fan is always on and only if the machine is idle the CPU temp would drop to 41C.

Interesting though the fan would never go higher than 3000RPM. I like the way Lenovo engineers designed this laptop. IMO by far the best thermal design ever on a Thinkpad. Good-bye T42p

edit: your temps will be significantly lower as the NVidia Quadro NVS 140M is heating my whole system much more than your Intel GMA X3100

Yeah, since a couple of weeks I've got a ThinkPad T61 6457-5NG, T7300(2GHz), 4GB RAM, 15.4in 1280x800 LCD, 128MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M, Intel 802.11agn and ...... WinVista Business. I didn't belief it before but now after some time of getting used to it I'm not only fond of WideXGA but also of Vista and .... the aeroglass design . Only with TPFanControl, of course

Just wondering if the new version of troubadix's TP Fan control can adjust the fan speeds below 2500 RPM.

From what I've read, it seems it doesn't.

Any ideas how to recalibrate the fan speeds so that 1 = 15000-2000 and up so that 7 = 3500 (max)?

My T60 sets the speeds 1- 3 all the same -- at about 2500-2600 RPM. While this is OK in an environment with some ambient noise, in a quiet study room, it's noticeable and distracting. It seems like a better way of doing it would be to have a fan running all the time at lower RPM like 1500-2000 which would eliminate most heat build up and then have higher fan speeds kick in when the cpu comes under heavy load. I have the integrated graphics chip so cooling that is not a problem as it is with those with Raydeon, etc.

OK, no worries. Your TP Fan Control is a fantastic program, but I have to remember that "you can't always get what you want".

I guess I'll just try to keep it cool by undervolting and putting an constant external desk fan on it.

Talked to him a bit via PM and he asked me to post the issue...

WinXP SP3 (note that SP3 may have something to do with it)

Using the alternative 'acpiecnl.sys' driver in the '\TPFanControl\optional\acpiecnl' directory and merging the 'acpiecLogOff.reg' file causes windows to become unresponsive for about 45 sec. just before log-on.

troubadix asked what the CPU usage was, but i was unable to ctrl/alt/del. I'm guessing it was pegged. No errors in the event log, and i haven't yet enabled any logging in TPFC.

Note that the alternative driver may not be the issue, as the problem only occurs when the 'acpiecLogOff.reg' file is merged, regardless of which driver is loaded, or even if TPFC is installed.

It appears the installer does not restore the registry when TPFC is uninstalled, as i was still having the problem. I had to reinstall and merge the 'acpiecLogOn.reg' file to resolve the issue.

Anyone else seeing this and, if so, what service pack?

UPDATE:

appears the troubadix TPFanControl.ini is not well suited to a T60, at least not in my case. I notice the left palm rest (GPU? -- i have a dedicated card installed, but i don't have a T60p) gets very warm. Looks like what the "SensorName" strings are actually supposed to be (for a T60) is in doubt as well - i keep finding conflicting information. Just a heads-up

Hi. Great app. I just installed and ran it -- but am puzzled: with a T60P, how/why can my GPU be 78 degree? I have 2 browsers, 7 tabs, and 3 instances of Foxit reader open. I am not running anything graphic intensive and my Vista Business is running in performance (non aero, most basic) mode.

gpus in T60s are real hot stuff (ATI commonly), temps might show 120 degress (centigrade!) while gaming before emergency shutdown. Don't worry .

i installed it on t42 (2373) and works fine.
but, with this config:

i have this annoying issue: the cooler starts at 45, stops at 44, then starts immediately at 45, stops again at 44 and so on. so, it starts, it stops, it starts, it stops etc.
it would be great if the cooler starts at 45 and stops at, say 40. is there a setting for this i didn't find?

I wrote a separate utility that will reset TPFanControl to smart mode every 30 minutes. Its useful to me because sometimes I set it to manual mode (0, fan off, super quiet) and , and later forget to reset it. Its a very small exe that doesnt use any resources.
