Hi - I downloaded TPFanControl V 0.5 and can't figure out how to get it to turn the fan on!! The fan has given up coming on at all - it used to be on all the time. See my post in this section regarding overheating causing video to die. :cry:
Sure wish I could get this thing going... ! Having a hard time without my constant friend!

Hello Sir,

I was facing a problem that my IBM thinkpad R50 e was getting stuck up after 1 hour of usage.. I am using XP windows service pack 2

I installed a software that monitored tempature and I was astonished that my cpu temprature rose to 65 degrees and then computer stuck.

then I googled some software to run the fan as I noticed that there was no noise of fan even at this high temprature and this is how I downloaded and installed tp fan v 0.61 :)

A BIG THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU !

I have installed it and now am able to use my lap top as now I can run the fan and the temprature now remains at about 52 and never goes above 60.

I have some points.

( I live at a place where room temprature normally is about 35 degrees, all tempratures that I mention in this post are in degrees centiigrade)

1. When I select BIOS mode, temprature starts rising and the fan never turns on automatically, I think this is the basic fault which was causing my lap top to get stuck again and again. . Can there be some way of changing settings of this BIOS in built fan so that it starts working normally and should start at least when temprature rises to above 55.

2. If I use smart mode 2, fan keeps running continously although I hear its voice to increase or decrease with increasing tempraure.. Even in this mode if I use many programs at a time the temprature suddenly shoots and computer gets stuck... I think time interval should be less than 5 sec in which tp fan checks the temprature because within 3-4 seconds the temprature rises to dangerous level and by the time tp fan turns on the fan computer is already stuck.

3. Manual mode keeps my fan running all the time and I'm worried would it burn my fan. although temprature keeps to below 60 with that mode.

4. When I restart my computer the tp fan starts in smart mode 1 i.e. forcefully keep the fan off and I have to very very fastly change it to manual or smart mode 2 otherwise computer would stuck.. can there be some way of starting the tp fan in the smart mode 2 ?

I would be grateful if these queries are answered.

I am a doctor and was having a lot of problems with my computer getting stuck up in the middle of a presentation and sometimes doing a very important work.

thanks again for this great software.

best wishes.

Hi Shararti,

1. there is no way to change the built in settings of BIOS method controlling the fan
2. you can edit TPFanControl.ini to change the interval of checking temps:

Code: Select all

// ENGL: check temperatures every x seconds (default 5)
Cycle=5
3. suitable for continuous duty manual mode is set to fan level 7 by default
4. TPFanControl will always start with smart mode 1 (Active=2), but you can edit TPFanControl.ini to exchange settings of level2 and level (1), default is:

Code: Select all

// profile "Smart Mode 1"
// Celsius:         	// Fahrenheit:
// change values and number of items for your needs
// !!!! "Level" FAN 0 > 80 -> switch to Fahrenheit !!!!
Level=60 0		// Level=140 0
Level=65 1		// Level=150 1
Level=75 3          // Level=165 3
Level=80 7		// Level=175 7
Level=90 64        // Level=195 64

// optional 2nd profile "Smart Mode 2", switched by icon menue
// change values and number of items for your needs
// to deactivate, insert leading '//' into following lines
Level2=22 0		// Level2=70 0
Level2=33 1		// Level2=90 1
Level2=38 2		// Level2=100 2
Level2=44 3		// Level2=110 3
Level2=55 7		// Level2=130 7
Level2=66 64		// Level2=150 64
Level2=77 128		// Level2=170 128
I live at a place where room temperature normally is about 35 degrees
you should try to reduce heat production by undervolting (RMClock) and/or setting processor speed to "ADAPTIVE" or "DEGRADE" in WinXP power scheme, using ATI powerplay, and switching to standby at non-working time. All air entrances especially underneath must not be clogged. Additionally, if you are able to dismantle your TP R50e, you should keep your fan clean by cautious vacuum cleaning and thermal grease between processor chip and heatsink (fan) in a good working condition (replace if needed).

ciao, troubadix

Thanks a lot.

Now I want

1. Icon to change colour in smart mode 1, previously it was changing colour in smart mode 1 according to temprature 50 55 and 60 but now it is not changing since I have changed settings, rather now it changes colour if I select smart mode 2.

2. What is the minimum seconds duration that can be kept , I changed it to 1 sec buy I noticed that laptop was hanging again and again, now I have changed it to 5 sec again. Should I keep it 5 or can change it to to say 1, 2 or 3.. ? I feel that my computer suddenly heats up and fan does not accelerate accordingly. Does changing the detection of temprature interval and decreasing it puts additional load on computer ?

Settings I have now are as follows so that you can advice accordingly.

Other problems are almost solved now.

Best regards :)

Shararti wrote:Now I want Icon to change colour in smart mode 1...according to
IconLevels=50 55 60
you have set in smart mode 1:

Level=45 3
Level=48 7
Level=56 64

you will have the max. conventional fan speed of 7 above 48 degrees (coming from below) [and unconventional unregulated fan speed of 64 (coming from higher temps)] and your icon switching temp of 50 degrees should not be reached so often.

additionally you have set: IconColorFan=1
that will keep the icon in different shades of green when the fan is running.

2. there should be no problem or extra processor load setting Cycle= to 1 or 2,3,4. Processor load for TPFanControl.exe always should be below 2 % in task manager.

go to:
Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad R50e, R51e, R52
in
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-54932

see page no. 109, remove old grease by lighter fuel (petroleum ether), for best replacement use Arctic Silver 5, a very thin(!) layer. Your risk!

I am a silent running paranoid person
Just bought the R500
asking for advice, I hear something that sounds as a fan to me, from the right bottom corner of my machine. It is bearable, even for me, but anyway, what is it? a smaller, essential fan that fancontrol does not tamper with, or the hard drive? thanks

thanks, for the utility as well, it is phenomenal, donation on the way... :D

do you think the hdd can be upgraded to ssd?
- the 3D driver whatever in your signature, what is it? anything that could downclock my gpu? in my Ati Catalyst Powerplay Foreplay thing, I only found two settings, battery optimized and high performance, I assume the battery option downclocks it

I managed to buy the only TP where the graphics are not switchable...a bit pi*s*ed off, but not too much, the T costs almost two times that , I will not need mobility or high portability from this machine, it is basically a second desktop, to be also used for work at night

Hi!

Donation is anytime welcome!!

If you're looking for absolute silence use Intel X25-M G2 Postville HDD and spend 200 Euros at least, or have a look at Hitachi TravelStar 5K160 80 GB SATA HTS541680J9SA00.

The 3D driver in my signature is outdated for your purposes. Use "battery optimized" option of your driver, but I guess there is not much of effect :(

it makes no sense to choke my poor CPU or GPU.
As that would only reduce fan noise, and it is the HDD that is the culprit not the fan. The fan is ok.
Unless there is another fan in there...I hear too much going on in there, with main fan switched off, I still suspect there is another fan...Is there any way to find a screenshot of the internals? Maybe I ll just ask the service people here they must know.
thx

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I cannot get the program to start properly in Vista. I set up a scheduled task, running with highest privileges. When Vista starts, the program runs, but runs in Active=0 mode, and the windows pops up in view rather than minimized. If I close the program and manually start the shortcut that the scheduled task points to, it runs minimized and in Smart mode like the INI file says.

Anyone had success with this?

It's a question of paths. If earlier versions of TPFanControl can't find its INI file this behavior will result. v0.62 will not start without its INI file.

TPFC.62 is currently showing load cpu temperature at 67c. However, core temp 0.99.5 is showing 76c. RMClock also shows 76c.

Which one is correctly showing the right temperature?

Weird, it's approx the same today. TPCF, core temp and real temp 3.4 are getting the same results. I just downloaded hw monitor pro and the result is the same.

I admit I haven't compare the temperature results other than yesterday. I just installed Win7 64bit and rmclock and was undervolting so I wanted to check the temperatures.

I'll reboot and double check.

update: It's the temperature readings are the same now. :) I guess something was screwing up the temperatures reading for the other programs before and increasing it by ~10c. The other temperature results are now consistent with TPCF's lower temperature readings. Thanks!

update2: more weirdness. Seems like when the laptop(x61t) comes out of sleep, all the tpcf readings were ~5c lower than other programs. The tpcf reading were consistent with readings that I got when all the programs gave approx the same reading prior to going to sleep/standby. (I haven't testing this multiple times to see if it happens again.) After rebooting, the results were approx the same again (+- 2c).

I'd rather suggest to rely on TPFC, 'cause TPFC relies on embedded controller, and embedded controller is independent of any operation system and sleep or standby states. You can check it activating a thermal emergency shut down by stressing cpu while keeping an eye on cpu temps and comparing temps with shut down temps of manufacturer data.

But keep in mind what Intel says: "The reading of the external thermal sensor (on the motherboard) connected to the processor thermal diode signals does not reflect the temperature of the hottest location on the die."

I have a T61 with an Intel 965 and the fan started turning on and off recently...tpfancontrol with default settings right after installation only makes the cpu temp rise but does indeed silence the vent. Who's wrong here?

Current temps with default settings:
1 cpu 60°C
2 aps 39°C
3 crd 36°C
5 no5 33°C
7 bat 31°C
9 bus 38°C
10 pci 40°C
11 pwr 43°C

Could you help me set up tpfancontrol please? Thank you in advance.

Hi all,

I've downloaded & installed TPFancontrol, but am not sure how to set it up for my R61e. I am not a rocket scientist with this sort of stuff, so could anyone please give me some guidelines/instructions on how to do that? I will be very grateful! I haven't managed to find a manual or other info to help me. Thanks very much.
