I have e T43 and I'm happy with it. However, for some reason, the fan is about as loud as that of my girlfriend's old Dell

I've tried to go through the 12 pages of the *Fan control utility* link, but I'm having difficulties finding the most recent version and how do I set it up so that I won't burn down my CPU

Can someone help me with a 'dummies guide to fan control utility'?

Well, after you have downloaded the latest version...give the readme a read or two. Then setup the control.ini file to give the program active control of the BIOS/EC. Most of the parameters have already been set up for you by default; feel free to change them, however, if needed (you can also look at the data points in the shared values thread here as well). HTH

And you will not fry your CPU from the get go as long as your follow the README file.

I will be trying it out as soon as possible, but actually had the same question as the TS. I have been ploughing my way through the now 13 pages of the *Fan control utility* link (the end is not yet near) and have the problem that I do not know enough to understand everything. I had been running NHC but several people report conflicts. Others try to make it run as a service and post different downloadlinks etc.
Maybe a FAQ thread (only modifiable by the program author and moderators) would be useful for ignorats like me who still want to learn something new. Some discussions take pages and at the end I am confused. If in this FAQ thread the final opinion is put, it would take away my doubts... For example also, what program should I use instead of NHC? What are the options...
Nevertheless, I continue to read the 13 pages. I am committed to reduce the fan noise on my T43p (2669)...

Hmm. that FAQ thread sounds like a good idea; I might give it a shot.

Well; NHC seems to conflict with the way FCU reads off the values from the EC through Windows; you can use RMClock instead to monitor the temperatures and clock speed instead and it doesn't interfere with the FCU.
There is also another little utility to do the same stuff, but I forget what its name is now.

All that you have to do is to download the *.zip file, then extract everything to one folder; after that is done, you follow the readme and change the *.ini file. Play around with the *.ini file some or grab a set of values from the value report thread on this forum and you're good to go.

Does RMclock also allow "downvolting" the cpu and "downclocking" the GPU? I think that taking care of the cause of the heat first is crucial...

Yes and No.

I use RMClock to undervolt cpu and RadLinker to underclock the Mobility Radeon. There are other ATI utilities that can do the same thing.
