thanks RBP, is it the screw stands on the back of the keyboard or the ribbon connection that makes this keyboard one of a kind? My power botton does not turn the machine on and off. I bought a keyboard on ebay but that had the same problem. This is a pretty old laptop but I am pretty happy with it and I really like to find a solution even if I had to improvise. Any suggestions?

A port replicator often has an addtional switch. That said, at least on 50% of mine, I have found that the Mobo often times does not seem to register the key press. Or swap the keyboard to a new machine and it works fine. A known good keyboard on the "bad" machine, and it still does not register the key press.

thanks Ron, I was hoping to find a close enough keyboard to modify so that I did not have to carry around a port replicator.I find it interesting that the key press is not always recognized by the mobo. It kind of makes sense because I have three otherwise perfectly good keyboads except for the power key. Today, I noticed a hole on the back of the keyboard immediately below the power key so I sprayed into the hole with electronic spray cleaner a couple of times but it did not help.

My hand built T30 with all the go fast goodys has developed the no start issue. After several "known" good keyboards I went back to my pile o crap and fished out a few mobos that were likewise noted...............some started after 12 push button cycles, some started after just 2. Darned if I know.

well you certainly have solved my problem since you mentioned multiple key strokes. I used to quit after a few soft touches but now I just keep beating the sh......... out of it till it gives up and it does- just that. I don't need a keyboard anymore but I think I need a mobo for another t30 I keep in the garage. The screen went black right in the middle of software update but the cpu kept on going. I remember reading here that the black out screen is a sure sign of dead mobo. I am going to lookup that post but if you can solve my problem again with another fast remedy let me know. thanks

Power up the dead T30, and if the HDD light continues to flash, look a a significant angle to the screen and you may see the very faint outlines of test/screen saver. If so its a bad back light.
