Who makes a good PC card (or cardbus) to USB card

#1 Post by cadillacmike68 » Sun Sep 02, 2012 5:08 pm

I'm getting tired of the USB 1.1 on these T30s, so I'm looking for a PCCard or CardBus to USB 2.0 (or 3). Who makes a good one? As always, thanks.

IBM (32P5080) (ASIN B00006HUXD) and Apricorn (EZUSB2CB) (ASIN B00006BAXM). Other numbers associated with IBM ThinkPad USB 2.0 CardBus Adapter include 33L3245 58P9298. Maybe Ratoc, Buffalo, and other foreign brands. And the following are examples of good cards, but not Hi-Speed: Macally (UH276) and SIIG (US2236). I guess, these were manufactured by AVLAB.

If one does not use feeBay, then I might risk trying SIIG JU-PCM222-S3 sold by PSI.

Most cards on the market have near-worthless power regulation, and I do NOT trust them, not even to power a mouse. I suggest using external power, if the card is of dubious quality. Most cards have EIAJ-02 power inlet. One can easily find high quality 5 volt power supplies with EIAJ-02 plug. Hint: PlayStation Portable and many high speed Internet modems.

Moderators, Admin, can this be moved to the T30 forum. I put it here by accident. Thanks.

I've been using an "inside hide" CardBus adapter for quite some time. Quality is Ok, I mean my computer didn't burst in flames :) . I use it mostly with a USB 2.0 external hard drive, with my "hack" hard drive works without a problem, and I use it a lot, sometimes I download and watch things from it at the same time. For something that costs under 10$ is pretty good.

:) mib404, I am happy to see you here.

When I say I do not trust most USB CardBus cards, what I mean is: I do not trust the bus, the communication, that the signalling is reliable, that packets are going in and out without corruption.

USB performance is affected by signal quality, line noise. Like wireless networking, and like wired networking. I do not know what source I can reference for this idea; I read it in assorted conversations much like this one. Microchips can be affected by environment variables. What if, when a load is applied to a cheap card, the power regulator introduces noise in the USB data lines? Or, maybe it has no affect on the LVDS USB lines, but could it be affecting the USB host controller? I believe, that a cheap card can introduce undetected errors, leading to incorrect data being stored on a USB storage device.

I want not to misguide anyone. I have no education of computer, electronic, or communication engineering.

I simply appreciate, that I can feel the difference between plastic and metal cutlery. I hate how high-tech consumer electronics is so often "mystery meat". The eBay and Amazon marketplaces are full of paper plates in the china category, plastic spoons which look like metal in the photos, and sellers who's business strategy is to ignore customer's questions. I trust the retailer PSI, they will not sell plastic forks as metal.

I know what you mean, some things that come from China are cheap and unreliable merchandise. One thing is sure, these cheap cards are selling on ebay like hot bread, nobody had the problems that you are afraid, so far from what I've seen and experienced. If you look in my topic the built quality in Ok, but I don't have a more expensive one, one made by a big company to compare it.
If you buy an expensive one, take it apart, make some pictures and post them on the forum, for comparing with the cheap ones. .
