Reseating the CPU

#1 Post by Bot13 » Wed Sep 05, 2012 2:02 pm

I have a T23 1.2Ghz w/ an intermittently working mem socket and the alt socket will give the 1-3-3-1 beep if a 512meg stick is used. Once the stick is reseated it works fine, but will act up again eventually.
Does reseating the CPU have potential? Can I just put the 1.2CPU on another mobo for the speed and added mem (the OS will be reloaded as pent M code is diff than pent III)?
Any other suggestion to fix the mem slots?

What board are you intent on putting that CPU on? Where does Pentium M come into the equation here?

Re-flowing the solder lines is the recommended fix. T2x series had Pentium III, not 4M or M.

My bad on saying Pent M, got some wires crossed somewhere. Don't know which board exactly, but have 3 T23 w/ 1.13Ghz CPUs and working mem slots.

As for the solder lines, would that be the mem slot lines?

Yes, those are usually the ones that get micro fractures. This is mainly a T30 problem, but some T20 series also develop the same problem. I have a T21 that has it along with 3 T30s. And I need to find a shop that can repair them properly and inexpensively.

After reading the link from RBS, I took the kb bezel off and removed the Drive bay. There were 2 blue pads, one of which was higher on an end due to a surface mount chip. Removed the pads before using a fine point iron on the side that only worked once. Upon reassembly, both sockets worked fine. Done know for sure if the pads had much to do w/ it, but they both seem to be working fine.

The reasoning on the Pent M vs. III, I loaded Xp on another T23 w/ a 1.13 Ghz CPU and switched it to the 1.2 board. There were loading problems an I/O (cursor) gliching, so I assumed the OS code was different for that cpu. Used my b/u & SSD to find they work fine. Must have had a mem node breaking contact or something.

The AS5 seems to put off more heat on the heat sink. What is a good reference to overclock or under volting the T23? Can it even be done on the T21?

Drudging this system back up. Seems to be more to the problem than just a bad mem socket. The system is not stable, desktop icons disappear after extensive use lose of cursor control, and it want to "end program" of several apps upon shutdown, that I never opened. HDD constantly spins. It seems something fell on the back side of the unit, cracked the back of the case, bruised the screen at the bottom. Might the I/O board be causing this, or could it just be a bad CPU? Will a SL5CK(1.13Ghz) drop in SL5CL chip socket(1.2 Ghz)? (sorry, I'm not familiar w/ board models sys 2647-8RU)

I have a spare SL5CK chip from a parted out system, as well as the I/O board.
