I just found this forum and found a lot of answers which might be useful in future.
I am owner of a T23 and like to use the thinkpad series.
Now I had the following problem :
after the CPU fan made me crazy by the noise , I monitored the message
"fan error"- so I tried to push the fan - and it started to run - but still noisy.
One day, pushing was without any effect,so I replaced the fan. The new fan
was tested by 4.5 V of a battery and worked fine.
I carefully opened the thinkpad and prevented a static overload while working.
So I detached the fans connector, replaced the fan and started the machine... but still a fan error message appeared. The fan did not start
to run as usual while booting the computer.
I tested the new fan again - it is still working. So the problem seems to be
the powersupply to the fan.
I also installed TP Fan Control to run it manually - but it does not run.
Even when displaying 70 C´, the fan does not start. After that I will
reduce the tasks or power down the machine to prevent an overheated
CPU.
After searching in this forum, I did not find a useful solution.
Do I have to replace the mainboard or is there still another chance to fix
the problem ?
By the way - the CMOS battery is now 7 years old... I read that an empty
battery could cause this message, but would that cause a complete fail
of the fan system ?
Greetings from Germany
Manfred
