T22 with WinXP performance question

#1 Post by chzuck » Tue Jan 08, 2013 1:36 pm

I have been told that a T22 with Windows XP is very slow. Could I hear from some who have tried running XP? I would like to hear your opinions.

It Depends...on a bunch of stuff.
2 major variables are:
- How much RAM you have. I have an old Dell laptop that was almost useless with 384MB of RAM. Not enough RAM and the computer has to use the page file and swap memory...which is SLOW. IMHO XP is not usable with less than 512MB of RAM. The less RAM you have the more aggressive you have to be in cleaning out resident programs, to give you the more RAM for applications. I just deleted iTunes from one of my old laptops for that very reason.
- How full is the drive. Old small drives that are almost full means the computer will thrash the disk more to save files. If there is not enough free space, you will not be able to run a disk defragmenting program.
- What program are you intending to run. Some programs require more computer resources than others.

I have XP running on a couple old laptops. One is an 800MHz Dell with 768MB of RAM. It is acceptable for browsing the web, but not streaming video. It was a slug with only 384MB of RAM.

ps Please edit the title of the thread to reflect your question, maybe "T22 with WinXP performance question." WinXP is so vauge that was was not going to read the thread.

Windows 2000 Pro will scream on a T22, higher than that and your asking for issues.

If you like the T22, you will LOVE the T30 I have seen them sell of Feebay for under $50.00, no HDD or OS.

I have watched a R51 for more than a month that would make a great, but cheap upgrade.

Im not associated with this seller, and it is possible it has other issues.

If you need a copy of W2kPro, I can possibly help, PM me
If you go the T30 route, PM me for additional information on XP.

I agree with Jronald. The T30 is much better suited to XP. It has a max 2GB RAM capacity vs 512MB on the T22, and it's processor is approx double the speed (1.6-2.4 GHz vs 800-10024 MHz). This is a significant change in the overall capacity.

If you already have a T22, keep it with W2000 or W98. Otherwise get a T30 (or T40 series) for use with XP. Or a T61 (with Intel only). I like XP on my T30s Yeah, T60 series are faster (I know, i have a few of those), but the T30 is rugged and fits in my travel case. Eventually, I'll go off it to a 4:3 T61, when i re-deploy back home.
