Buying a screw set ebay... *PIC*

#1 Post by 123434 » Fri Dec 20, 2013 6:24 am

I have some screws missing...(See picture linked*)
- Unidentified upper left corner ? (Why this screw was opened ?)
- One HDD screw down right corner. (This opens HDD)
Is this a good solution(bought already): http://www.ebay.de/itm/350741463458?ssP ... 1497.l2649

I believe that screw set you have linked will do you just fine. That big chunky screw towards the middle-bottom, with the big groove and extremely big head is the one for T2x HDD doors.

About the second picture you posted... If you mean the small "chip" off that panel on the lid of your screen, that's actually a rubber cover, and the chip is to let you use a flat device to pry it off. So that's not a broken piece, no worries. Hopefully it's the same deal as on my A31p... it should cover an interface(bunch of contact nodes) that let you plug in a special camera to go on top of the Thinkpad. Sounds rare... for me, that's a challenge accepted.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

Good good... :thumbs-UP:
Only that one screw(upper left red circle) near the DVD-player which one of the screws in the set is it ?
and why someone has opened it ?
+ Should there be a cushionpad(rectangular inlet) just beneath that very same screw ?

+ What kind of look does genuine IBM HDD steel case have ? (Can any 2,5" HDD fit in to it ?)

+ Charger\DC power cable. What can you tell about this one. Suitable for IBM T23 ? I think it is not genuine.

The upper left missing screw is only rarely used. It's for keeping the CD-bay-latch locked.
In 99 out of 100 machines this screw is missing/not installed.

The rubber strip covers a USB-connector for a special T2x webcam.

That power supply is a Chinese knock-off and also dangerous for the T23!
The T23 requires a 16V/72W adapter, NOT 19V!

I bought the original used supply 16Vx4.5A=72W.

Does anybody have picture of 100% original IBM HDD metal case\caddy ?
Do these look like genuine ? (I have one that stucks and has no multiple holed pattern)

Either eBay item will do fine.
You don't need/want an original IBM one.

There is no threaded hole in the unofficial HDD metal case which previous owner had put in(with samsung 5400rpm HDD).
I bought the missing HDD screw and now I can't screw it in because threads are missing.

Where does the HDD screw attach to ?
- To the sheet metal HDD case ?
- To the hard disc itself ? (Do I need the original Hitachi drive to use the HDD screw)

The screws simply pass through the caddy and thread into the HDD. Not necessary to have a Hitachi HDD, it's a standard screw hole, and as faar as I can tell, all 2.5" HDD have the same holes.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Is the thread found in this HDD ?
Samsung mp0402h (40GB, 5200RPM) (Is it compatible with the HDD screw ?)

As Neil said, it's a standard screw hole that will be there as long as you are using a 2.5" IDE or ATA laptop hard drive. All manufacturers should have them. What may not be standard is the hard drive caddy (case). If it has a solid bottom and no cutouts for the holes, this may account for your "missing" threads. Here's a picture of the T23 hard drive caddy with the cover in place:

http://www.kawakami-ca.com/images/T23_hdd_caddy.jpg

In the photo, the upper left corner is where the HD screw would go. When installed into the laptop, the screw will go through the hole in the cover, through a hole in the frame and motherboard and thread into the hole on the bottom of the hard drive. The hard drive caddy should also have holes in the other three corners but for the T2x, nothing goes into them.

Unfortunately, that's one of the things that the HMM doesn't mention. Instructions for the removal of the Ultrabay device ignores taking out the security screw first  . I think I have a couple of screws at home and I'll measure them if somebody else in the meantime can't come up with the dimensions. From memory, I believe it's an M3 screw but don't know the length. It has a thick, flat (pan) head and the ones that I've seen have a wide slot, suitable for using a coin to remove it. I know that's not much in the way of "security" but I'm sure you could get the screw with whatever tamper-resistant style you desire.

Located what I believe to be the retention screw for the T2x Ultrabay. Note that while this screw FITS and works as it is supposed to (prevents Ultrabay release latch from ejecting), it may not be the original screw sold with the system. I say that because the head is slightly thicker than what would be a perfect fit:

http://www.kawakami-ca.com/ibm_t2x/Ultrabay_screw/

It's an M3 x 4mm, "cheese head" screw. Slightly different than a "pan head" in that it has a squared-off head (as opposed to a curved edge on a pan head). I measured the screw diameter and it was very close to what is published as an M3 (0.115mm vs. 0.118). The thread pitch was estimated as I couldn't get a good measurement with my calipers; M3 coarse thread has a pitch of 0.50mm. The length is fairly critical it that you don't want the screw to intrude any further into the Ultrabay than necessary. 4mm is enough to fully engage the threads in the Ultrabay release lever but not go past the top surface of the lever. You should be able to use any cheese or pan head M3 x 4mm screw, with the only restrictions that the head be less than 6mm in diameter (so it fits in the recess on the bottom of the system) and that the head be no more than 2.1mm thick (again, so that it does not stick out too far).
