Inserting Ultrabay PLUS drive into 2000 possible ?

#1 Post by 123434 » Sun Dec 22, 2013 12:30 pm

This site says T23:"UltraBay 2000 or UltraBay Plus"
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T23
Will UltraBay Plus fit in to UltraBay 2000 on T23 ?
Matsihita DVD-drive is "broken" and reads "probably" very badly CDs and DVDs when installing windows XP PRO...
So now I must buy a new reliable drive...

What is the most modern reliable internal DVD drive that will fit and work with my T23 with adapter or so flawlessly ?

The compatibility matrix on the following page:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/UltraBay

indicates that an Ultrabay 2000 driver will fit into an Ultrabay Plus bay, but NOT vice versa.

It appears, however, that most T23 models shipped with an Ultrabay Plus bay, or what is called in the tabook - Ultrabay Plus-compatible Ultrabay 2000 (confusing, yes), so you are probably OK, unless you know for sure that yours is one of the older models.

- What to look for if I use a flashlight and peek in to the empty slot ?

Honestly, this documentation is confusing.

Apparently, the only difference between Ultrabay 2000 and Plus is that the Plus can also support the Device Carrier, which the 2000 does not necessarily support (although according to the T23 maintenance manual, it does, so go figure).

This suggests that the Ultrabay Plus / 2000 optical drives are really the same, and all of them will work in your laptop.

But since I am far from being an expert on these old systems, I suggest you wait for answers from some of our members who have first hand experience, just to be 100% sure. :)

I have always considered the T23 to have an Ultrabay 2000, that also supports Ultrabay Plus devices. However, I've never owned such Plus devices.

I have taken several non-Thinkpad original optical drives and by installing the Ultrabay 2000 side rails and IDE connector, turned them into drives that the T23 (and other Ultrabay 2000 systems) can use. Most of them are M a t s u s h i t a UJ-8x0 drives (i.e., DVD burners) but I've used other manufacturers. An example here:
