T23 Half-Life OpenGL Issues
T23 Half-Life OpenGL Issues
Has anyone been able to run Half-Life on a T23? No matter what OpenGL setting I pick I get a message telling me that "The selected OpenGL mode is not supported by your video card." yet I was just running the same mode in Quake II. Software rendering works, but is a little slow, and Direct3D is like watching a stop-motion video...
I'm running Windows 98 and have the latest drivers from IBM/S3.

Re: T23 Half-Life OpenGL Issues
Most software in Windows 98 these days requires DirectX 9.0c, and to run in DirectX mode.
For example, Google Earth runs much slower in OpenGL than in the native DirectX it was designed for.
The final DirectX supported on Windows 98 is October 2006:

Re: T23 Half-Life OpenGL Issues
Finally got a working T23 machine. I dont know about 98, but on XP CS1.6(same engine as Half-Life) runs great 800x600 OpenGL! Also played other OpenGL games - QuakeIII (runs very well 800x600), Return to the Castle Wolfenstein (playable, but crashing much). Direct3D - BF1942 (slow), GTA Vice City (some slow), NFSU (very slow
), GTA SA (failed to run)

Re: T23 Half-Life OpenGL Issues
Thanks for the reply! Are you running Half Life from Steam or the old disc version? I still haven't tried updating, I'll have to do that next time I have the T23 out.geka3250 wrote:Finally got a working T23 machine. Old disk version. BTW 1024x768 also playable. 800x600 16bit is about 40-60fps, 1024x768 16bit 30-40fps

Had some fun with T23 today
Config is PIII-1.13GHz, 1gb SDRAM. 3DMark2000 gives me such result:

Lets improve GPU cooling with soldered copper pieces heatsink and 120mm fan. Overclocked it with S3Tweak from default 143/143MHz to maxed 200/180MHz:

And here is 22% 3D performance increase:

3DMark01 default 143MHz results:

200MHz OC done without opening keyboard(but with fan turned to 100%, otherway overheating problem and BSoD "S3Sav") :

31% performance increase.
Supersavage is very slow and buggy videocard, but with good OC ability

Re: T23 Half-Life OpenGL Issues
The T23 is an ancient relic when you consider gaming in any way shape or form. I tested out one of my T410s models on Insurgency on Steam. I just got a T410 with Nvidia graphics as well. The T410s has Nvidia graphics. Even with 8GB of ram these laptops are not designed for 3D games. It actually runs pretty well. For a T23, I would suggest games like DOOM or Duke Nukem.
Re: T23 Half-Life OpenGL Issues
Of course T23 is not a gaming laptop. Its interesting to do some benchmarks and overclocking it.
For DOOM and Duke I have PII-300 Toshiba Tecra 8000 with MS-DOS 7.1 - I prefer to play DOS games in native mode.

Re: T23 Half-Life OpenGL Issues
The T23 is not ideal for Doom or DN3D at all- it has no MIDI hardware built in. It's great for newer stuff like Quake/Quake II though. As for me, I use a 600E for my DOS gaming.

Re: T23 Half-Life OpenGL Issues
Have anybody tried S3Metal API for Savage on T23?
I cant find s3metal.dll in WINXP S3 driver pack and Unreal cant use this mode. Is it W9X only feature?
It looks cool even with 8mb video memory!

I was referring to the original Duke Nukem, not the 3D version of the game.Kasm279 wrote:The T23 is not ideal for Doom or DN3D at all- it has no MIDI hardware built in. It's great for newer stuff like Quake/Quake II though. As for me, I use a 600E for my DOS gaming.

Oh whoops, I missed that part. My point still stands about Doom, though.Hans Gruber wrote:I was referring to the original Duke Nukem, not the 3D version of the game.Kasm279 wrote:The T23 is not ideal for Doom or DN3D at all- it has no MIDI hardware built in. Re: T23 Half-Life OpenGL Issues
My point still stands about my opinion of the capabilities of the T23 graphics wise. That is why I listed Doom as the type of game suited for a T43. I was one of the original Counter Strike players. I had a Geforce 256 which was Nvidia's original card. I upgraded to a Geforce 2 and I needed that for Counter Strike. That game is 1999. The T23 is 2001.

Re: T23 Half-Life OpenGL Issues
When I briefly had a T22 I did try Quake II and it had no problems.
