PCMCIA Wireless Card for Thinkpad T30

#1 Post by rdstovall » Thu Aug 13, 2015 6:21 pm

I am trying to find a PCMCI Wireless card for an IBM Thinkpad T30. Have Goggled it but want to make sure I am ordering the correct one. Don't see any that say they work with the T30. Sure would appreciate a link if anyone can help.

Thanks,
RAS

Welcome to the forum!

Why a PCMCIA card? Every T30 has a slot for the wireless card on the bottom of the machine, and the antennae are already in place.

Thanks a million! Just want to make sure I understand correctly. So don't get a PCMCI card but rather just a wireless card correct. Does it have to be specific for the T30?

You need a card in so-called mini PCI format, which has been replaced quite a few years ago, however there's a zillion used cards available on the market.

T30 shipped with "b" only cards, and you'll need a "no-1802" hack applied before installing the new b/g, a/b/g or a/b/g/n card. Your favourite search engine will be your friend in locating this file.

Most people using T30 were keen on Intel 2200BG wireless card, which should be obtainable for $5 or so nowadays.

Happy upgrading.

According to my eBay history, I seem to have bought a card like this the last time I needed one for one of my T30s. http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-2200BG-27K9 ... 2c8a253353 The T30 isn't with me right now, so I can't open it up to verify. I think I remember I needed to buy it as I ran into issues with the original card and WPA2 encryption.

Or go wild, do NO-1802 first and then install wifi-N:

or second choice:

Many of these T30's shipped with Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1).

If you want access to the newer WPA2 networks, don't forget to install Service Pack 2 (SP2) or here plus the KB893357 update or here.

If you have a faster T30 and sufficient RAM, you can install Service Pack 3 (SP3) or here which already has WPA2 support built in.

I have a linksys card you can have for shipping, but they are fumbly to use and generally dont work as well as the MPCI card. Follow RBS's advise and go for it. I has done the NO-1802 hack hundreds of times. I prefer the Atheros product over the Intel. They tend to lock on better, faster and stronger in my experience.

A example and the first one I found, not the best, not the worst. In this case you MAY not need to do the hack.

An alternative (should you not wish to mess around with the hack or hunting for a reliable mini card) would be to buy a cheap usb wifi dongle. I picked one up off Ebay for £2 and free shipping and it works fine for occasional browsing via Google Chrome. The only issue was that it reminds you that it can perform faster as the usb socket on T30 is not USB 2.0 but this is not really a real issue.

USB 1.1 is going to be painfully slow if you're trying to transfer anything locally, but it should be fine if you're just browsing the internet.

I (temporarily) use a usb wifi with 1.1, that's indeed slow but fine enough for browsing/loading low def videos, etc

The next time you receive the message, click on the ballon before it disappears. In the dialog that appears, uncheck the box that notifies you of USB errors.
