Why was the T3x series to short lived?
Accordingly, each new series had a new primary number, and processor revisions had secondary numbers. The T30 and T40 both use Pentium 4 CPUS. Why wasn't the T43 not a T34?
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

T40 uses Pentium M CPUs.

Re: Why was the T3x series to short lived?
30 gen's design prevented the use of extended batteries. With the introduction of energy efficient Pentium M they probably wanted to see how much more battery runtime they could get and incorporated the extended battery design sticking out the rear in T40 and R50.
Just my theory.
Just my theory.
Re: Why was the T3x series to short lived?
Also, the notebook industry in general started moving towards slimmer designs - beasts like old Alienwares excluded - and a T30 was just way too bulky.

Re: Why was the T3x series to short lived?
A and G series are also an exception in that case.
Also is it just me or that I prefer T4x's design of moving the ports on the left hand side and VGA on the right hand side (which I don't use because I use DVI almost all the time) so that I don't have to guess by muscle memory where it is and also I don't have to snap a USB port with this laptop in my lap and tilted and with a USB drive plugged in?
Also for some reason, maybe due to T3x's high RAM slot failure rate, they moved one RAM slot to under the keyboard. Is that to have computer noobs have a harder time figuring out where the second RAM slot is?

Check out the T30 heatsink-fan design. Who needs heatpipes?
T30 is also the first Thinkpad with Ultranav. Such a cool laptop.
What's faster, 2.6 Ghz P4-M or 2.1 Ghz Dothan?

Re: Why was the T3x series to short lived?
Fine, well put a MasterAir Maker8...no actually how about a H100i...no how bout overclock it to 8ghz and put LN2 cooler in. Thats why theres a PS2 port for an external Keyboard. The ultranav should still fit even though Trackpads are the devils playtoy.TPFanatic wrote:Check out the T30 heatsink-fan design. Who needs heatpipes?

Re: Why was the T3x series to short lived?
Even the entry level 1.5GHz Dothan will be likely faster than a 2.6GHz P4-M...

Re: Why was the T3x series to short lived?
Not quite.
A series was discontinued along with T30, give or take a couple of months.
G series...what they were thinking with that one remains mystery to me to this very day, and I do have a soft spot for these monsters. But a gleaming success - unlike the T4x generation - they were not.
Nah. Another small step in getting the systems thinner, and sexier-looking.Also for some reason, maybe due to T3x's high RAM slot failure rate, they moved one RAM slot to under the keyboard. Is that to have computer noobs have a harder time figuring out where the second RAM slot is?
A lot of thought went into slimming T30 into what became a T40.
Amen. Not to mention cooler-running by so many margins it's not even funny.
That's one of the reasons why the higher-clocked ones could be used as electric blankets. IBM's cooling designs from this era - yes, I'm looking at you, A3x series - generally left a lot to be desired.TPFanatic wrote: ↑Mon Jul 17, 2017 1:14 pmCheck out the T30 heatsink-fan design. Cool-looking if not cool-running laptop by all means, although I prefer the palmrest without a touchpad on it, which IBM kept as an option for 14" T4x units, but not the 15" ones...T30 is also the first Thinkpad with Ultranav. Such a cool laptop.

Re: Why was the T3x series to short lived?
Sexier laptops are ones where I plug as many things into it as I care to desire, not ones where even USB is a scarcity along with functional keyboard keys. Those are just useless.

Re: Why was the T3x series to short lived?
At least the 15" R-series can be had without a touchpad, thanks R50e, if you like plastic laptops.
Re: Why was the T3x series to short lived?
Nothing wrong with plastic laptops as long as they're ThinkPads. Easier to clean than a T/X series. Love my A31p. I know that's fresh news for everyone here...
And, the R61 was the last 4:3 15" ThinkPad...that could also be had without the touchpad...

Re: Why was the T3x series to short lived?
I like my A30p for almost the same reasons. Sold my A31p because I'd love to have my lap stay intact from heat, get a much longer battery life at that and the 1.2Ghz PIIIM performs faster than 1.8Ghz P4M.
There are those features that one would dream to have on modern laptops from A3x:
1. awesome speakers
2. awesome typing experience
3. good display
4. dual Ultrabay makes file transfer at many scenarios much easier on the go
5. (if you are into this kind of thing) no touchpad
6. audio in without a dock - pretty important feature to me
