T30 Disk removal

#1 Post by karotlopj » Fri Aug 04, 2017 5:50 am

I have a T30 which is reluctant to part with its hard disk. I extract the cover of the disk and pull it out about half an inch but no further. I don't want to exert too much force in case there is something holding it which I might break. The instructions which I've seem indicate that disk removal should be straightforward, but my disk seems to be stuck.

Good idea....The keyboard is off but the bezel is being stubborn... I'm a bit scared of breaking something,

The T30 seems really badly designed.... I've removed 30 screws so far and haven't managed to get the bevel off. Can't see the T30 getting re-assembled :(

Did you read and follow the instructions from the T30 manual? (see HMM link at top of page)
I guess not...

Most thinkpads of that era need no more than 10 screws in the correct order to remove kb/bezel, as RBS says download the HMM and with a ruler you should be able to get the right screws back in correct locations as the HMM tells you which screws go where.

You mean: ?

It makes it seem a lot easier than it really is.

One of the pre-requisites is to remove the hard disk drive, the removal of which is the reason I'm trying to remove the bevel in the first place, ie to get access to the disk housing.

Yes but that doesn't physically stop you removing the bezel. It's just good practice for service engineers.

To remove the T30 hard disk, turn the machine over.
Only ONE screw needs to be removed: the one that holds the HD-cover.
After that you can just slide out the HD-cover with the HD attached to it.
What might happen sometimes, is that the plastic that's covering the HD-caddy has come a bit loose.
In that case just move the HD back and forth and pull it out a bit harder every time.
Worst case: you might tear that (white) plastic, but that's no problem.
Fix it again with scotch-tape.

I know the theory, it's just that the disk won't budge more than half an inch and the back of the bevel seems to be stuck under the screen - can't see anything holding it in place.

I'll go through the HMM manual again. BTW I looked for the link that you keep mentioning but I don't see it.
