The T2x wifi-lid is different from a non-wifi lid.
The T2x wifi-lid has "antenna windows" (for lack of a better word) left and right.
Theoretically many antennae from different laptops could fit, but they wouldn't really work properly.
The non-wifi lid's material doesn't let enough wifi-signal through to be effective.

Hmm where do you suggest to put the antenna in a lid that doesn't come with antenna? Back of the lid? I have spare 15" T4x antennae that I wanna make use of.
Back of the lid is what I do on my x21. It's a quick and easy solution.

Along the top would be the most advantageous.
Just make sure they do not touch any metal parts in the lid or from the LCD.

And if I could a related question – are antennas fairly easy to come by?

I've looked on ebay (UK) and while I can see antennas for other ThinkPad models, there's nothing for the T23. I wonder if I antennas from any other models would be compatible with the T23?

Cheers.
You can adapt pretty much any of the antennas on ebay into the T23. Fit one under the keyboard and the other under the hinge cover or on top of the LED using the aperture where the webcam connector is.
Alternatively I have a working T23 with factory fit wifi T23 and a TP-Link mPCI adapter available for a few quid if you are interested.

Antenna from spare parts/dead laptops work too. I had done just that to a A31p that I sold and it works decently well.

Regarding my ThinkPad T23, does anyone know if PCMCIA cards definitely perform faster than USB 1.1 on wireless internet?

I was reading online and found some articles that suggest USB 1.1 severely limits the transfer speed of wireless internet.

I have a DWL-G630 that I bought new about 10 years ago, and it has the Atheros AR5005G chipset. The original version 3.00/3.05 drivers are severely out of date and do not support WPA2: http://sdfox7.com/dwlg630/

However, I found updated drivers online by reading info on this site. The drivers are dated 9/30/2009 and are version 7.7.0.406.

I downloaded the drivers it linked to (atheros_ar5xxx_770406_xp.zip) and this card now supports and connects to WPA2 without a problem. Upon testing, it certainly seems like the PCMCIA is performing at faster speeds than Wireless N on USB 1.1.

Of course USB 1.1 severely limits wifi performance-- its bandwidth is 12 megabits per second-- for comparison, Wifi-G is 54 megabts per second.

'Of course' is inaccurate. The machine COULD have an internal limit of 10 megabits per second and the USB 1.1 limit wouldn't limit anything. But, it doesn't.

Yes, the PCMCIA cards are definetly faster. I measured a download rate of 14mb/s and another user reported 64mb/s.

Go to the website 'speedtest', or look around for their python script, to measure your download rates.

The USB 1.1 ports on the T23 are connected to the ICH3 southbridge, which has a 266 megabyte/sec link with the 830M northbridge chip. The bottleneck is definitely the USB 1.1 port.

Thanks to those who answered that. I think I'll pick one up on eBay and get tinkering...

It's very kind of you to offer, but my collection of old ThinkPads has grown at an alarming rate recently (I bought a few spares-or-repairs T60p's from which to build a T601f), so I'd better not go for that just now!

To be honest, I think a N card is unnecessary for a T23, as the CPU then becomes the bottleneck even if you opt for the mPCI variant.
My A30p on Ethernet returns a speed of 16mb/s before the CPU reaches 100% and cap it at that speed.
EDIT: on best, best case scenario, I got 46mb/s on Speedtest with CPU load all the way up to 100% and soon afterwards the browser crashes.

I got inconsistent results on Speedtest using my school's wifi. The page also seems to be poorly written/coded. The multiple advertisements probably don't help; I'm not sure if they contaminate the download speed if they are downloading during the test.

The beta page is worse than the legacy Flash version, the upload test never happened. Tested on Firefox 45.9.1 ESR with Firefox 52 user agent.

I know that RBS recommends PaleMoon.

Personally, I like K-Meleon. It is ultra-light weight and you can easily switch off ads, javascript, cookies, popups and images on the fly.

I bought a brand new Sanyo-manufactured battery on eBay for $27 (link). I received it a couple days after buying the machine and after one cycle it holds about a 2:30 charge.
That battery looks reasonable but otherwise could be rather dicey, based on seller's many negative feedbacks!

Just following up, it's been about a month. According to the battery applet on the Windows taskbar, I am averaging about 3 hours on the battery with the default IBM power settings. This is going to fluctuate between 2.5 and 3 if I have a browser window and Office document open, which is my typical usage.

I'm sure the fact that the Speedstep can clock down to ~500MHz during "idle" doesn't hurt!

I just ordered one of those batteries for my T22. I noticed the price dropped to $16.99. I hope the one I purchased will work as well as yours. Now I just need to find one for my 600.

Hi everyone, I actually found newer drivers, 7.7.0.523, which also work with Windows 2000. (I tried the newest 9.2.0.104 but those are only for Windows XP.) You must use 7.7.406 or 7.7.523 to have WPA2 support under Windows 2000!

I just wanted to bump this and say I've been very pleased with the performance of this battery over the last year and a half, even though my cycles are low and I usually have this computer plugged into the mains. The eBay link is still valid if any of you need this battery.

So you bought a aftermarket battery from a shady seller for a 20 year old computer and it still works. You better start buying lottery tickets.

I'm guessing you haven't yet read the earlier parts of this thread, as I already addressed this. First, 322 neg feedbacks / 34300 positive in a 12 month period is less than 0.01%. When you have as many sales as this Top Rated Plus seller, you're going to have some dissatisfied customers. There are a lot of companies still in business that have worse ethics and a far worse satisfaction record.

In fact, the seller's current record for the past 12 months is 25,336 positive and 214 negative. Still less than 0.01%. Out of 351,031 feedback ratings, that's stunningly impressive. I'm willing to bet that some of these negs are due to sour grapes buyers with who the seller already rectified the situation. I am also pleased with the seller's money back guarantee as that instills confidence.

The negative feedbacks are probably for various different items and doesn't mean these batteries are unsatisfactory. To generalize is just silly.

It's not "less than 0.01%". It's either "less than 1%" or "less than 0.01", but not both. :)

In statistics we used 0.01, that's the calculator output. I suppose if you multiply by 100, you get 1%.

I use a PCMCIA/PC Card WiFi adapter in my T23.
That way I am not using one of the 2 USB ports, and PC Card as stated is fast enough.
And the PC Card WiFi adapters are pretty cheap now.
The only con is that I have to remove the card when traveling, as it sticks out the side of the computer, just asking to be hit and broken.

ThinkPad T23 has a miniPCI slot that is only used for a modem.
If you don't need a working modem (presumably you won't in 2019), sticking in a miniPCI Wi-Fi adapter requires some custom job of routing the antenna and nothing else really, and it works quite well if the antennae are done right.

On most models it's a combo card, modem and wired LAN. So I would vote against removing it, unless one never uses LAN.

Wasn't there a CDC card with an ethernet controller?

The T23 should have a CDC slot to utilize that ethernet daughter card, which could free up the MiniPCI slot for machines that came with the MiniPCI combo card.

I stand corrected. The previous T2x models did not have the CDC, at least my work-issued T20 didn't.
