256 MB RAM for T20/21/22

#1 Post by Summer Deep » Fri Oct 18, 2019 1:44 pm

Trying to upgrade a T21 from its current 256 MB (1 x 256MB module) to the maximum 512 MB. Problem is that the required PC100 256 MB modules seem to be pretty expensive (£20+ not uncommon), and some of the sources are problematic as well (eg postage costs of £10-£30 from USA). Thought I'd struck it lucky when I acquired a 256 MB stick for £2 off Ebay, but perhaps predictably it didn't work (incompatible, or more likely defective).

I'm wondering whether It'd be feasible to swap in a PC133 stick from a T23. Could anyone please tell me whether that'd work?

Also would a 512 MB PC133 module work in just one slot, leaving the other empty?

For the time being, I've ordered another cheap PC100 one from Ebay, 128 MB this time, but fingers crossed it might work, as it's an IBM product...

I believe there were some PC133 sticks that would work...but they HAVE to be low density. At quick glance you can generally tell a low density from a regular, based on the extra nodules on it.

I do know a 512mb in one slot won't work...

EDIT: Double checked...only the T23 can use the 133s...
EDIT2: There apparently SOME low density PC133s that would work. I'm done editing now that I have really even confused myself. Lol. I used to be able this question and any like it, without the slightest doubt.

Since I own both a T22 and a T23, I think I might as well make this clear.
The safer option for getting 256MB sticks working on a T22 is to go with the PC100 option. However as you know those things command a premium for being the highest capacity available for a generation of devices.
If you do decide to save up and get a PC133 SDRAM instead, make sure you get the 16 chip option. Here are two RAM sticks that I have. Both are PC133 and both work on a T23, but only ONE works on a T22. And no, using PC100 on a T23 won't even give a post so I know that 16 chip one is indeed a PC133 stick.

Thanks for those opinions and pieces of advice, which I'll bear in mind for future reference. I've fitted the 128 MB PC100 module, raising the total system memory to 384 MB, and it's working fine. For an outlay of under £4, including delivery, I regard that as a good result and a satisfactory interim upgrade.

EDIT/UPDATE (19/12/19): Just acquired an IBM PC100 module (256 MB) for £4.99 (including postage), and it's working perfectly. I'd describe that as a result and a half!
