MiniPCI wifi card T23

#1 Post by Irina060 » Sun Sep 11, 2022 7:59 am

Hi, I found a miniPCI card Actiontec 802MBN ayecom-WL5114, it is WPA2 and wifi n compatible. It is actually wifi n-draft but still around 300mbps which is pretty cool.
I was wondering if this card is compatible with the T23, it is a bit larger but it should fit.
I have been using a pcmcia conceptronic card, also WPA2 and wifi n (non-draft) 300mbps but I guessed I could use this pcmcia slot for something else. On the second slot I have a USB 2.0 card.

I know there is a similar topic regarding this from 2008 but I thought it might be better to create a new post.

Unless you use Linux, it is NOT recommended to go online with a T23.
Even then it will be extremely slow/limited.

I am using a dual boot with XP and Q4OS on an ssd, the results are amazing. I normally use XP to play some games and linux to do mostly the rest. Going online is pretty snappy tbh, with the 1gb of ram it feels kinda smooth even in palemoon. Youtube is okay too if you dont go over 480p, takes some seconds to load but its bareable.
Will that wifi card be compatible?

ThinkPad T23 should not have any whitelist problems at all and hence any wifi card not OEM locked will work. Ironically many IBM OEM cards like Intel 2100 and 2915abg will NOT work on a T23 (but for whatever reason, IBM OEM Intel 2200BG will work - but ONLY if you have 2 antennae hooked up reliably).
The problem however, is that if you don't have a lid with antennae built in (those are very hard to come by), you will have to frankenstein some antenna solution. There is a hole beside the fan that's meant for the antennae to go through for the T23 lids that come with antennae, you can use those and maybe wire one antenna to outside of the PCMCIA cage or something.
If you load very specific things and basically the equivalent of putting the T23 on life support, yes it will do some sorts of modern web browsing, but my standards of usability in modern web browsing would be a Penryn based Core 2 duo machine like the T61/R61/T400/T500 or at least a 2.2Ghz clocked Turion 64 X2. Granted, the Tualatin Pentium III-M is a far far better experience in web browsing than the Coppermine stuff on T22, all without toasting itself to death, but even a 3 dollar Core 2 duo T8100 is like orders of magnitudes more performance...

Ah I see. I've read some other posts and in fact it had to do with the lid or screen cover. My model sadly doesnt have those antennas which is a shame, I will have to stick to the pcmcia wifi card for a little longer then. This upgrade is going to happen just not as of today lol
Thanks for the replies ^^

I you were to tell me that some weeks ago I would have bought it no questions asked. But I made some upgrades myself and the only thing Im reaaally missing is the miniPCI wifi antennas (which is a new screen itself lol). Other than that Im actually served with an SSD, 1gb ram and a pentium 3-m at 1.33ghz. It makes wonder about the legendary p3-m at 1.4ghz that couldnt finish the experimental phase... juicy juicy... but a bit off topic.
Anyways if I cant find a screen in some time I know who to contact :)

1.33ghz p3-m?? That chip is exceptionally rare and you should most certainly hold onto it... Though if it were me Id think an A30p deserves it more...

That 1.33 GHz must be a typo!
T23 uses 866 MHZ, 1.00, 1.13 and 1.20 GHZ Tualatin CPUs.
They run at 133MHz FSB.

It did came with a 1.13ghz cpu, but I managed to find and buy a 1.33ghz to replace it. Right now though Im in love with this T23, its potential never ends! Im really in awe with this laptop, old yet so powerful, and the upgrading seems to never end lol
I will keep the 1.13ghz tho just in case the 1.33ghz doesnt like the laptop. Im hoping for some improvements :)

Actually 1.26 and 1.33Ghz Pentium III-M CPU's do exist, just they are limited editions and don't come with T23. That said I did receive a very limited 2.5Ghz Pentium 4-M inside an A31p before so it's still possible.

Really makes you wonder which cpus were designed and produced but never saw the light of day. Some engineering samples can be seeing from time to time but not many laptop ones uh

Edit: What I ordered the other is a P3-m 1'33ghz BGA. My plan is to desolder it, solder some pins and go with it. It is the same cpu after all right?

Extra Edit: I messed up big time. I reaaaaally messed up. Well thats how people learn lol lets see if I can find it for real somewhere. Oh god I really messed up lol

Well these things use variants of Socket 478. Like in fact every Intel laptop CPU sockets from PIII-M to the Core 2 duos use some variants of Socket 478 mechanically (pinouts are totally different though).
The fact that you even got ahold of any pentium III-M 1.33Ghz chip is a miracle as those things are ridiculously hard to find. If it is a BGA479 chip like what you mentioned (like the chip would be the same size as your current Pentium III-M chip but without legs), I am sure someone on this forum would be happy to take it, attach legs on it, and then make it an ultra rare 1.33Ghz Pentium III-M and put it inside a Thinkpad A30p or something. Don't risk ruining such a one of a kind chip yourself though.
Just buy a mass produced 1.2Ghz PIII-M chip and call it a day in CPU upgrades.

I dont think the cpu would fit in any socket even if you add legs to it. The pin layout of the cpu is different and to my knowledge it has more connections than a regular pga cpu
