UltraPort Pinout

#1 Post by bhtooefr » Sun Sep 11, 2005 8:22 am

Does anybody know it?

I know that the underlying protocol is USB, which is why I want to know. I want to make a top-mount USB port for my X21 (to use the otherwise unused UltraPort, and to make it so I don't have to buy a hub).

I think You might want to take a look at this:

http://thinkwiki.org/wiki/UltraPort

...btw I just digged up this old topic because I was about to ask about exactly same thing. Is there a way of utilizing this extra USB port in my T23? It's somewhat different but if we were able to e.g. attach a Bluetooth USB dongle to it... how does that sound in your ears?

P.S. That was my very first post in here. I'm glad to be the part of the community and I hope to help alot of people and also grab some knowledge and great contacts, too. Cheers!

Interestingly, that information was not available at the time I had asked the question.

Unfortunately, the laptop in question is no longer in service as a laptop.

However, this still might be a viable project... so feel free to use my thread for this, as long as the mods don't mind. :)

Ultraport

I know that they made a Bluetooth adapter for that as well as the Webcam, but they may even have made a USB adapter for it as well. I can't remember off hand... it might have been a card reader.

Bluetooth dongle, IR dongle, CompactFlash dongle (totally pointless on an X series), webcam, and a directional microphone.

Now, with the cable included with the webcam, one could find out what the unknown pins are once and for all, as the cable that came with the webcam adapted the UltraPort devices to USB.

I have one of the webcams with the cable. Is there anything I can do to help?

has anyone asked IBM what the pinout is?
i tried the thinkwiki article and tried to solder a working device to it with no success since my T23 did not notice the device at all, not even an error message
i measured the pins and found pin3 to be +5v but pin4 to be +3v
but i dont know how to identify the D+ and D-

also i searched the web but could not find an ultraport to USB adapter attachment

I'm pretty sure somewhere on this forum there's instructions on how to create a USB port from your Ultraport. I'll see what I can dig up.

I want to say rkawikami had a post on converting that ultraport to usb . I'm sure the instructions are on his website. I will see if I can dig them up.

No, sorry I don't have anything on the UltraPort pinout. I've been mulling over the idea of mounting something more useful in that area for some time but I haven't been able to find anything off the shelf that will work.

There's Ultraport pinout on the very same Thinkwiki link given above.

In order to use USB functions, just use +5v VCC, GND and Data+ and Data- pins. That's it.

Right and 3.3V connection is for the CF reader from what I read. Didn't find the voltage spec on the microphone.

I guess the question that I've asked myself is; What device would I use from the Ultraport that I cannot from the other two USB ports? The camera and maybe the Bluetooth but I'm falling short on anything else that even remotely feels like a "must have".

As far as the hub suggestion, while my Ultraport capable X2's and T2's sit on my desk I have a USB Apple keyboard attached with a built in low speed hub.... so there goes that idea for me.....

I was planning to use cheap USB Bluetooth dongle as built-in in the LCD lid and connected to the UltraPort USB pins.
