T23 operating temperature
T23 operating temperature
I have a T23 with a 1.2GHz processor. It runs hot -- is ~70° C a normal temperature for this machine? I've been getting errors lately from my wireless mini-pci card, and I'm trying to determine if the processor cooked it.

My t23 with 1ghz processor runs up around there when I'm really giving it a workout. The fan tends to come on around at 50-something. Don't worry about 70 though, the warn temp I believe is 85 and shutdown is 90 something. If you're at your desk try to prop it up on something to increase airflow beneath it. anything more than the mid 50s for the hdd is bad.

Fan control?
I want to use my T21 as a server (running OS/2 here) and by proping up the thinkpad and dock, I have hard drive temperature at 45C. But I want it even cooler, because the computer will be on continuously.
Anyone done fan control? (any operating sysem -- you can bet I'll have to code this myself for OS/2) The laptop is plugged in, so all I'm trying to do is balance longevity with saving electricity.

Fan Control for T23
I have installed the Shimodax Fan controller on a T23 (available on this forum here). I have only used the controller in the inactive state but it appears to work fine. My CPU temp varies from 54 to 74C and on BIOS control the fan seems binary with no other speed control. I will set the controller to active once I have a little more time. I have not tried the T21s as yet.
The CPU temp does seem very high and I may renew the themal goop that connects the cpu to the heatsink - does anyone know the correct proceedure for torquing down the spring loaded screws for the heatsink?

T23 CPU Temperature
I changed the status on the Fan Controller and using the 'smart mode' the temperature now fluctuates a few degrees around 50C (instead of 50-70C) - a significant improvement: 20C (30F) reduction in peak temp . The fan does seem to come on more often but the cycle ratio (on/off) is not that much different. The T23 seems to only have one fan speed so perhaps it may be wiser to set the threshhold for turning ON closer to 55C...
I am still quite cautious about the controller - for fear of frying my CPU - but what the heck, nothing ventured nothing gained!
