error 0271 password

dont know if anyone can help but, i have an ibm t23 laptop running win xp. this morning when i switched it on it would not boot up all it would do is come up with error 0271 check date and time then it goes into a screen with a padlock awaiting a password, i dont know what password to use to get into the setup. I bought it second hand and was able before this problem to get into the bios with no problems and i re installed xp, its been working ok for the last month but i did notice the other day that the time in win xp was different so i put it back to the right time in win xp. At the moment it stops on the black screen awaiting a password i have tried F1 to get into the bios but no luck.I also removed the small cr2032 lithium battery to see if it might reset the cmos but it did not work. also i read it could need a new lithium battery but what i have read about these ibm laptops on the net i might still need the password to reset it;;

I would try replacing the CMOS battery first. Sometimes, when the CMOS battery goes bad, it will cause things to act funny, including asking for a password.

I saw a post on here somewhere, where someone had the same problem....they were able to fix it by replacing the CMOS battery.
