T30 Memory - BIOS version to run 2GB??

#1 Post by Guest » Sat Dec 17, 2005 9:55 pm

Does anyone know what the requied BIOS version is to run (2) 1GB SODIMMs? I have searched on this site a few times and all I found is that you need to have an upgraded BIOS. Someone posted saying it works with V 2.06 installed. I have V 2.01, and want to make sure the computer will support the memory before I purchase it.
Thanks for any help.

It worked on my T30 (2366-41U) with BIOS Version 2.07.

Instead of trying to figure out how low the BIOS version can be, why not just upgrade the BIOS? It is very simple, even though it can be very dangerous.

You answered yourself in the post...my computer works now, and thats the way I like it. I just thought, that with as many T30s out there as there are someone might know. Since I would be buying the memory online, I don't want to go though the hassle of having to return the memory if it doesn't work on my computer. Especially since some stores have goofy return policies concrening electronics after they have been opened ie; exchange only.

I should clarify that the only time that is really dangerous is if you aren't careful in selecting the correct BIOS for your machine. IBM makes it very easy and painless. Other companies don't quite sort the versions for the specific machines, like IBM.

The ones that have had problems with their Thinkpads, have generally been because the system was likely overhauled with a system board that was a different type number than the original. (personal experience) Using hindsight, I learned to check the current BIOS instead of relying on the number listed on the bottom, for verification.

If upgrading the BIOS is necessary to run (2) 1GB sticks of memory, I would rather just go with what IBM reccomends as the max. The computer is new to me and works fine, minus needing some extra memory.

The great thing about the T30, if you are running XP or Win2000, is that with the Software Installer, it will download the exact verison for your computer. It will then prompt you through the process, including restarting your computer. There are also excellent readme files to walk you through every step, even though the instructions will be on the screen.

I totally understand your hesitation with it though. I hope that I didn't make matters worse with my initial comment about it being dangerous.

I don't know a great deal about computers, but I knew before reading your post that I really don't want to mess with the BIOS unless I have to. If it really is as easy as the other software I have downloaded from the Lenavo site I might eventually do it...I just have to remember to read everything.
Thanks
