go for 5400rpm, seagate or hitachi, I like seagate, currently both of these drives are sold at good prices..

Given the current prices of new drives, I don't know why you would want used unless it was really cheap.

If you're seriously thinking about used, like taking a used car to a mechanic, I suggest running the drive manufacturer's tests before you purchase. The Hitachi DFT and the Seagate test software are availabe on the respective websites. I assume other manufacturere have their own tests.

Most brands work, not just Hitachi and Seagate. Those are just ttan98's preferences.

If you check this post:

asiafish has a new 20gb for sale for $40. This drive should work just fine for you.

any 2.5inch drive that fit into the slot will work, as long as it is IDE. You will need to move the mounting "sleeve" from your old drive to the new drive and it will plug right in. I have pulled apart many Ts and have found Hitachi, Toshiba, Seagate, IBM (pre sale to Hitachi).
