T22 - replacement of motherboard

#1 Post by paperchase » Sun Dec 25, 2005 5:57 pm

I've been having problems with my old t22 model 2647 for a while now.
It turns out that my motherboard needs replacing as it no longer 'uses' power correctly. However, it recently stops booting completley and just 'idles' when switched on. Im hoping that replacing the motherboard will correct this issue but the only one I could find on ebay is for the t22 with model number 2648 (im in the uk) would this be compatible with my t22 2647?

Yeah, get the 2648, install your RAM, HD, CD/DVD, LCD and KB on the replacment and turn it on. You may(prob will) have to reload to OS to fix the drivers installed.

In short, yes, it will work.

Just one more question if you dont mind, the seller describes this as being 'the entire lower bezel plastics with cpu and motherboard' apparently all i need to do is to take off my existing screen and put it on to this 'base' unit. How would I do this? im planning on doing it myself to save money but have never opened up a laptop before. Is there a guide available?

heres the link to the motherboard I bought.

I've removed the entire monitor assembly, and it's not quite the PITA that you think it would be. the problem I always have during reassembly is remembering which if of the 153 screwes goes where, because they use about 5 different lengths of screws, and if you miss one, you have to get the whole thing assembled before you realize it...

As I recall, you don't want to dissassemble the friction stops the support the monitor, you want to unscrew the support for those stops. Make sure the friction stops aren't too tight: Mine managed to crack a piece of the chassis on the right side, thus necessitating the removal af the 487 screws that hold the [censored] thing together. I swear, a t22 is 80% screws by weight. In the end, the only thing I could do was loosen the friction stop to not stress the right side any more. There's no way to fix the crack short of a TIG welder.

The monitor connects to the mainboard near the back, just left of center.

Funniest thing I have seen since Christmas ...

Actually, I always thought that any Thinkpad was 80% "Rescue and Recovery" by volume but this is an entirely different way to look at this, very very funny ...

Just dont screw them back in too tight. They are nylon coated so they cant come loose. IBM strongly recomends using new screws during re-assembly, they are available online....... one question, will a T-23 system board fit a T-21 chassis without problem? The cpu heatpipe looks like it may mount differently.

Don't get me wrong, I love my T22, which was my first laptop. My friend swapped in a P3 1ghz processor, so it's fairly well qualified for what I need.

And really, dissassembly isn't that bad. But the first time I reassembled it after a complete teardown, I had 7 screws left over. SEVEN! Of course, I did disassemble it late at night and without the aid of any sort of caffeine. Later I was much more careful to sort the screws as I took them out, but I still managed to put long screws in short screw holes and paniced when the short screws seemed to strip in the long screw holes.

When you think about it, having a lot of screws is a good thing. The alternative is to glue everything down so you can't possibly upgrade it.

Betabill, just read your post...

IBM sells new screws for reassembly? Is it just me, or does IBM have a few too many loose screws?

Heh, at one time they had a lot of loose screws, but they learned their lesson.
