T-23 systemboard and t-21 screen.

#1 Post by betabill » Sat Dec 31, 2005 12:27 am

Got a used T-23 system board still mounted in it's tray. I took the keyboard, a stick of memory, HD and floppy off my T-20 and connected them with a 15 inch vga monitor onto the T-23 chassis and verified that the systemboard is operable.
I'm planning on removing the LCD monitor from my T-20 for use on the T-23 and use a 15 inch vga monitor with the T-20, and I wonder if the LCD lid will display the higher resolutions produced by the SuperSavage 16mb display adapter in the T-23.

It depends on the model of the T20 and the T23. Both models were available in different resolutions. What models do you have ?

Its a 2647-2TU. I returned all the components back to the T-20 2647-92U 'cause I will need too pick up some pc133 memory before I switch the LCD panel.. Surprizingly though, the T-23 booted with 128 meg of PC100. I just wondered if any of the ThinkPad 14.1 inch LCD panels would be compatible . The current display is from a T-21, works fine on a T-20, has no dead or stuck-on pixels and is razor sharp.

Just about any 14" LCD from the T-series will work on the -23.

I am -really- surprised the -23 booted with the PC100 memory. Normally it wont work with anything but 133 speed chips.

Both of those units are xga (1024x768) so there should not be any issues other than if the ribbon cables are different. If so make sure you use the right one.

Happy New Year to all readers of this forum.

Not strictly on this topic, but an issue addressed by Carbon-Unit in the last post; ribbon cable for a t-20. Hope that you can provide an answer.

My T-20 frequently on booting, has a blank screen; the backlight does not fire up. Open and close the screen and it comes on. Obviously, there is a slight glitch with the backlight connector.

Is it easy to dismantle the screen/laptop and check the connector and if so, how do I do it? Alternatively, is it easy to replace the cable?

Many thanks in advance.

You can get to the LCD connector by using your Hardware Maintenance Manual as a guide:

Thanks for the link. Looks to be what I need.

Is this a bloody difficult disassembly job with the end result being that I find a loose connector but the computer will never work again? Or is it really quite straightforward?

It is relatively straight forward. The Manual makes things so much easier, because it explains how to remove almost every single part of your laptop.

However, if it turns out that your backlight is going bad, then you are looking at a much more daunting task.

Got it; many thanks.

Don't think the back light is going bad. It works just fine, only when switching on, have to open and close the hinge a few times for the light to fire up. During that time, booting happens and when the light comes on, everything is fine. Can even swing the screen and it remains on, which doesn't seem logical if the problem is the connector.

Guess I will dive in a find out.

Sure thing, but I won't be doing it right away. Just gathering information at the moment, and I think I now have it all.

Work and other things take immediate priority.

Have a great 2006.

You might also want to check if the "lid closed" switch is sticking.
