Operating System not Found
Operating System not Found
Hello everyone, first post here, twice lately after putting my T23 2647 MU8 into sleep mode when I went back to use it It would not come out of sleep, I just got a black screen, then I would press and hold the Power button until it forced a restart, then I got a black screen with some other information and a message at the bottom that said "Operating system not found/detected" but after 1 or 2 more forced reboots it would start and run fine, I bought this T23 off e-Bay 2 years ago and it came with coa W2K Pro installed, it's been flawless otherwise, should I be worried about this?
What type of replacement drive does it take? Is it a regular 2.5" drive? And I don't have a operating system disk for it either, however I do have a disk for my Dell desktop that is now defunct, it's a legal copy of XP home, would it load and run on my T23? I used it with success on a Compaq desktop I was playing with before it died too.

Get some cloning software, you need a CD burner. Follow the instructions with the software all the drive contents will be on the CD's. When you get the new drive copy the contents onto it.

Another option...
Bixnet Computers sell replacement hard drives. They also sell a kit that includes a hard drive housing that connects to the USB port and some software that allows you to clone your hard drive to a new one. Worth checking out.

Is this what your talking about? Looks pretty simple, I wonder it that's a good price?http://www.bixnet.com/40gbezgigkit.html
The price seems a little high to me. Then again, I would just burn everything I need to a CD and do a fresh re-install. That way I have a nice clean OS. Then I load all the IBM stuff thats needed and create a restore point. Then load up my applications and documents.

The upgrade kit by itself is only $66.95. The price you see is high because it includes an 80GB hard drive.
I just bought a T21 and the problem I have run into is that I don't have the IBM recovery CD and I cannot find drivers for the DVD player, only an upgrade which won't load without the original drivers. Certainly open to alternatives.

I thought that too when I checked out the site, certainly you could peice together a kit yourself for less, however, for a beginner it might be better to have a kit with all the instructions and the software to do the clone. Might be worth the extra money.Temetka

Do you have the Win2000 or Win98 COA?Gord K. wrote:The upgrade kit by itself is only $66.95. The price you see is high because it includes an 80GB hard drive.

I have the original Win98 Product Recovery CD, the Software Selections CD and the IBM 10/100 Ethernet Mini-PCI Adapter with 56K Modem by 3Com CD. I can make copies for you, if you need the Win98 version.

After posting my previous post, I decided to find out whether or not that Software CD would install the DVD program (Mediamatics) with the fact that I have WinXp SP2 installed. IT WORKED!!!
I tried installing it on the T23 and the installer program wouldn't even open.
Is your T21 a 2647-xxx?
If so, I can just copy and send you the software CD.

Well cloning might be out of the question now, it won't boot up at all, this has been a bad week for me and computers, my Dell 8200 desktop had what I think is a motherboard failure last week brcause it won't detect any drives at all even after swapping out to a known good harddrive and different cables, so it's dead, now my IBM has quit, good thing I'm a packrat and kept this old dinosaur Panasonic CF-25 tucked away in a closet for rainy days, I haven't used it in at least 4 years and it fired right up, boy this thing has a nice keyboard, I'll have to use it more often. To bad it doesn't have a network card and I had to dust off the 56K too, this sucks. I guess I'll take out the harddrive and check for loose connections if I can figure out how to get it out. I'll do a search here, I'm sure I can find out how.
The price still seems high - that's $180 for a 4200 RPM 80gb drive. Compare that to this 5400 RPM drive at $115. It's not clear to me what advantage their PC card based enclosure has over an external USB enclosure like this $14 one, but unless they're significant, you're essentially paying $120 for their software, and getting a slower drive. That may, or may not be worth it, but I'd probably go with the USB enclosure and reasonably priced hard drive. If speed is a concern, a USB 2.0 PC card will help. This one is $16.Gord K. wrote:The upgrade kit by itself is only $66.95. The price you see is high because it includes an 80GB hard drive.
Gord,
I have a copy of the Win2k Pro CD for my T23. I am 99% sure it will also work with your machine. I can send you a copy, gratis, if you are interested.

I'm reporting this thread to the NSA and FAA, it's been Hijacked
Give me one of those W2K disks and I will forget about it. Anyway I got a Hitachi Notebook upgrade kit at BestBuy today for $149.99, it came with a 60GB drive, external case and a USB cable and the same software listed above EZ GIG II, all went well and I was able to use the provided disk as a boot disk, and the old drive worked long enough to be cloned, all is well in IBM land and I'm typing on the T23 now. The old drive didn't make any running noise but sure has a good rattle to it now that it's out. Thanks for the help......
